Here's an update on Paddy's lameness saga:
When I came to check his soundness after the box rest, paddy trotted up still lame on the off fore, so off he went to the vet's clinic for a lameness work up.

The lameness is definitely in his foot. The X-rays showed a flat coffin bone and problems with navicular joint. Further diagnostics showed that he has damaged his navicular bursa. There is no damage to the DDFT or navicular bone as yet.

Obviously this is devastating news as the bursa cannot mend itself - the damage is permanent.

The vet injected the bursar with hyaluronic acid and said that he should be on another 2 weeks box rest and then he will check his lameness again. If still lame he will the be referred for an MRI scan to see exactly what's going on in more detail.

The vet suggested that he might have to have a neurectomy, otherwise he will be in permanent pain and never be able to be ridden again. Also said that he would need to have remedial shoeing.

I suggested that it might be a good idea to take his shoes off altogether at which the vet nearly had a fit.

So far I have moved yards and he seems to have settled in well. I have changed his feed and he's now on micronised linseed, unmollassed sugar beet, Alfa A, (I am gradually changing this over to hi-fi molasses free) Pro Hoof, glucosamine, MSM & chondroitin, plus a couple of carrots and ad lib hay.

Farrier will come at end of January and now that I have done quite a bit of research and emailed Nic Barker from Rockley Farm, I am 99% sure that I will give barefoot a try as I feel that this would be best for his feet, given the problems that he has.

I can honestly say that this has been one of the worst weeks I have had in a very long time. :(
