Re-homing and ex-racer??

Just a quickie, would you sooner re-home an ex-racer from a charity, in the knowledge that is had been rehabilitated correctly etc, and face the vetting and cheak ups...
Or would you sooner buy one, from someone trustworthy, who knew about its history, but at the end of the day it was all yours...
 
If it was me - the second option, I think it's much better to know it's your horse and you can make your own decisions ....also if someone knows the horses's history and has the horses best welfare at heart then it's probably a safer option too ...
Just to add I could be talking about myself ! I have one looking for a new home and I've known him all his life ! Anyone looking ??
 
I keep switching at the minute, for when I move. Get a horse from the local charity or buy one to keep it as my own. With the charity one, you'll be giving them a second chance at being someones much loved pet, but face the risk of the charity saying no.
With buying one yourself, yes you get to keep it and it will be all yours (I'm going to be possesive when I get mine), but there are still owners out there that dont tell you all the information about the horse you are about to purchase. Both are about trust, giving and recieving the best information possible.
Which ever comes sooner I will be doing

Ultimately it would be the horse that decided it for me... I am getting a new horsey between November - January time, and i would love an ex-racer...
But I am wondering if I should really persue that charity option, or just horse hunt on my own...
 
I would go for the charity option myself!! Not only am I helping a towards a good cause, but also, I would have the back up from knowledgeable people if I ever needed help/advice.

I have been looking into this since I gave up my last TB. Unfortunately, I don't have the time (or the money!) to take on a fresh off the track TB, rehab it, and then re-start its training. As much as it sounds like a cop out, I would rather take on one that has had all of that done, and is ready to be brought on, and have fun with!!
 
Re-homing from a charity (could you PM me because I used to work for one) is a very good option.

You know exactly what you are getting they will tell you the whole story of the horse warts and all.
They have been schooled well and any problems tend to be sorted.
There is always back up for you if there are any problems
If it doesn't work out then they will always take the horse back and if you are a good home they often will let you take another suitable horse.
If anything happens to you or there is a change in your circumstances the horse can go back there and you know it is going to a good home for life.
 
i have considered this option too...still not sure yet though tbh, as i would want one that is purely mine to do with as i want, if i want to move it i can whereas with charity you have to get permission which isnt a prob, i have registered with some of the re-homing centres too they are crying out for people to take them on so they can get more in.
 
QR, A few years ago we rehomed an ex racer to a charity because it has arthritic knees. His new 'loaner' recently contacted us asking for advice on different matter, and was telling me how they were about to start serious jumping training.
They hadn't told her anything about his problem.
This is one of the big names, so perhaps that will make your mind up.
