I recently put a weight tape on Maggie and it showed just under 615 kg. Surely that can't be right? I didn't assume it was, and I haven't thought much about it as she looks fine - but how much do you reckon she weighs - just out of interest?

She is 17.2hh, TBxID, has had 10 days off but otherwise fit and in competition condition for SJ and dressage. Pics are not completely new but she looks the same now I'd say.

This pic is the most recent I think...

Oooh is she for sale ?????? I love her.

Her taped weight could be right, she's very fit and not carrying spare weight (I love them looking like this.) My 16.2, low wither, full-up middleweight KWPN has been weighed on a vet's scales at 630kg. He has much more of a bottom and neck than she does (just his type, not a criticism) So my guess is although she is very tall, she weighs between the 615 you taped her at and 640 tops.

I reckon 615 is about right my boy in my avatar weighs at 640 and is 16.2 and a bit and a HW as you can see. She is beautiful by the way I love a nice bay.

Your gorgeous boy looks to be quite high withered so if you accidentally had the tape not at the lowest point of the wither then you could be a little out. But 615kg sounds about right to me. My 15.3 veteran Section D x cob came out of winter quite lean (intentionally coz he's a pig on the summer grass) at 495kg and he is now at his fattest at 540kg. So I'd expect a 16.2 fit and well muscled 16.2 to come in at about that weight. Have your vets got a weighbridge? If you weigh him once properly at the vets and immediately note how accurate your weigh tape is, it will be more helpful, ie if the scales read 610 and the weigh tape reads 615 you would know to subtract 5kg from the weigh tape reading every time you use it. Condition scoring is much more accurate and your boy looks absolutely right and totally stunning x

Thanks guys! Really, you think it could be right? I just assumed she'd be heavier for some reason. That is really good to know, thank you for educating me, I'm useless with these things!

Box Of Frogs - she's a GIRL! ;-) Used to being mistaken for a boy though haha!

And thank you for all your nice comments about Maggie, she is great. Personality as large as her considerable body...

I think weight tapes are mainly to give an indication of weight loss or weight gain when used over a regular period rather than be a very precise reading of weight. I was astonished when a friend who'd been basing horse's weight on a weight tape reading got to go on a weighbridge and the difference was about 30-40kgs to what the weight tape was saying.

I would think she would weight at least that. She's a big girl (as in stature and build, not fat) - and quite, quite gorgeous!!!

Aw, thank you guys! She is a big girl and her riders are tiny (I am 5'3 and my sister a tiny bit taller) but she is so much fun. Very bossy and a massive show-off attention seeker though, she loves nothing more than an audience to buck and spin in front of. Which is why she does so well at dressage - she eliminates the competition in the warm-up... sigh.
