RE my post about foal and oldies

posted yesterday about my mare bullying the new foal and not wanting to put all 3 of my horses out together as worried they would pick on her.


Well foaly has gone over! the fence today and joined my two in 6 acres!

Just got a call to say this had happened but that they all seem ok, the oldies wandering off with foaly following and grazing, I just hope I can catch them all tonight :\

What is it with cobs and fences! every cob ive had has gone under/over or through fencing, electric here we come!
 
You didn't really expect a foal that young to stay in a field on its own did you, that's ludicrous, they always need immediate company and will, as you've found out, do anything to get to company? Let's hope it hasn't damaged itself.
 
Oh good grief what am I to do, Ive learned nothing in my 20 years of riding and owning horses, I must come to you so you can hit me with birches.


Its not a feild its a stable with a small turnout area, my vet suggested I left her in, I'll tell her off as well for you :)
 
I read your last post & my heart went out to you, but I didn't reply because I didn't have any advice!

I had an 'unexpected' foal a year ago & was really worried about how to integrate her into the herd - I needn't have worried as when she was 2 months old, the boys snuck through the electric tape dividing baby & mum from the others & they've lived as a happy herd ever since!

The only thing I would suggest is to make sure you don't fuss the foal too much over the others - jealousy is a terrible thing & one of the oldies might feel the need to be overly bossy if they think your wee one is getting more attention than they are.

Glad its sorted though - they are a worry aren't they?!

Perhaps she doesn't understand how strong a young foal's need for company is and what they will do to get to it either.

As I said before, I hope it hasn't damaged itself, it's easily done in those circumstances.
