Spoke to vet this am about mum's mare mounting my mare and not settling after 3 weeks.
He says its purely behavioural to assert dominance and she is unlikely to calm down whilst other mare is in eye, earshot.
Consequently, she's going back to Mum's tomorrow or Friday!

Get in touch with Crossgates Farm (Google them), they are holistic vets and will send you some stuff that will sort this. It's no big deal so don't worry.

Read your post this morning and had a feeling this is what it would be.

Your two have sorted out their hierachy and are happy, your mum's mare wants in on the act. Two's company and all that....

Sorry it leaves you with no horse to ride though

Mum doesn't live too far away, I'll make a concerted effort to go and ride once a week to keep the old girl ticking over!! Got that "I'm a failure feeling tonight" !!

Don't be silly, you're not a failure! The mare is just doing what comes naturally - I am I right in thinking she lives on her own at your mum's?

In the last couple of years she spent nearly 12 months on her own and then went in with a 5 year old (babyish) gelding and a 2 year old filly. She' is fairly bossy there but not violent behaviour like at mine!!! She's naturally placid actually and usually a dream to handle...15.2 labrador springs to mind!!
