Some of you have mentioned taking up driving instead . I have often pondered this but the only person I know who carriage drives always needs another person with her for safety?
Can you manage to do this alone, as I would have to hate to always rely on having company ?

No you need a 'groom ' to drive .
I do however drive experianced horse alone in my schooling field I warm up with the groom on the back when I am happy put them down and they keep an eye as they work along side on the yard.
But driving out never ever alone.

No, you can't do it safely alone. When daughter outgrows her pony in a few years I intend getting in touch with a local driving club & going from there. I worked for a few years on a yard with driving ponies & assisted with breaking a few but don't feel I have the experience to do it alone & it was years ago I last drove. I then intend roping in a horseless teen as an assistant!

I learnt while I had a broken leg I am back to riding now but still have a driving horse who I hope to do horse driving trials overthe summer and it's nice to know that as long as I can get on the carriage I will be able to keep horsing if I ever have to stop riding.
