9:46am Sunday 19th July 2009

By Naomi Loomes »

A man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of starting a house fire

Crews from two stations were called to the fire at a bungalow in Hillside Road, Sompting at 7.37pm yesterday evening.

A quarter of the building was destroyed by the flames and the rest was left severely smoke damaged.

A spokesman from West Sussex Fire and Rescue said: “One male had to be restrained from re entering the building.

“We are considering possible deliberate ignition and our fire investigation officers are looking into that this morning.”

Police were called to the scene. A police spokesman said: "The enquiries are very active this morning but a man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of arson with the intent to endanger life. He has been remanded in custody."

A man was taken to Worthing Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.
