took him out around the roads today for a plod in the rain. he was quite sluggish going out, we had company, my friend's 3 yr old. the minute we turned up a road towards home, he sped up and started being an idiot. i felt confident as we were on the road, i knew he wouldn't gallop off like he did on the hill. anyway, everytime i asked him to slow down he started to throw his head about. when we stopped for traffic, he was fidgeting about and tried the odd rear. the closer to home we got, the worse he got. i slapped his neck and said no, each time he reared, coz he did it right in front of a bus, which was v scarey. this is so unlike him! anyway, once we got to the entrance to home, my friend took hers back in and i continued on past, jst for a few minutes, went round a small roundabout and then took him home. the whole time he was messing about, even once we got onto the home drive. do you really think he might jst be testing me? this is so not him, even his old owner cant understand the change in his behaviour.

Have you changed any of his feed from what he use to have? He may just be testing you I am going through that phase with my horse atm when she was a star when i first got her. I am finding walks out in hand are good and she will walk really good and not start to jog and get silly. Also if u expect it happening you may tense up ? Just a few ideas .Good luck

Just wondered, sorry if it has already been covered , if you have had your ponies saddle checked, and his back?

he's on the same food he was on with his previous owners. a small handful of Happy Hoof. i also give him magnesium. havent had his saddle/back checked, i guess that would be a good place to start!

i do tense up if we're on the hill, since he galloped off with me, i dont trust him now, but on the roads i'm more relaxed.

he has been testing me since i got him in v subtle ways, tho mostly on the ground. he would pull me to get to grass or food, he would refuse to open his mouth for the bit, but all this i hve nipped in the bud. so i guess maybe he's now looking for other ways to test me!

back, teeth, vet, saddle.

not really fair to him to berate him for the behaviour until you are sure he is ok. He might have done something to himself in the field.

Is there any chance you could get someone else to ride him assuming they are confident and competent and see if he plays up with them like he does with you? Also i really would suggest some ground work and long reining and walks in hand as it has helped my horse a lot.
