I Have had the offer of my old pony back , on loan or to buy , Sold him nearly 3 years ago ,

ex pc pony , done all pc, sj, xc , outgrown by me , well officially I prob could still ride him nowadays as

is cobby ish and i am not quite 5ft 1 !
, but pc wise , was passed on and ridden by younger smaller members of my family , I had a 14hh pony and then got my big horses .

Sold nearly 3 years ago , lovely family , lovely home, Hasnt done much for a while as one child has lost interest and other child is riding bigger , less strong ponies at riding school .
Owner reckons pony has cushings, approx 17 yo , so maybe , on meds for this and restricted grazing etc .

How much for pony ??? Was sold originally for £1000 , Owner has suggested would like money back or as close to it as poss? I would love to have pony back , but this time of year , finances, the current climate horse wise I think it is a little over priced , although obviously he is worth millions of pounds for sentimental value, but I am unsure re pony prices , dartmoor x welshie cross , 13hh cobby ish build .???

She had said about selling him and could i let them know soon ???

I was thinking maybe £500 ish ? As although much loved and i would love pony back , 17 yo pony , with cushings , not really a total kids first pony , not done much recently , I dont think £800 or £1000 is very realistic ???

anyones thoughts ???
 
I would forget sentimental value for a moment. What would she be getting elsewhere from someone without the attachment?
Personally I would pay £500 at the most. But on the otherhand I don't know if I would like any of my childhood ponies back because I couldn't stand to see them get old I like to think they are all still out there standing on small childrens feet and spooking at not-at-all scarey fillers and getting yelled at by the DC. You could always tell them to put it up for sale and if they don't get a pesponse come back to you.
 
Thanks for that , I would def love him back !! He hasnt been diagnosed with cushings and I am not sure he has it , he had a bout of laminitis, but then i think it was just because he hasnt been in enough work , and if i have him back , I would prob just hack him every other day , he is more a small adults pony really !! lol , and also I now have a little brother who is into horses now , he was just born when i sold pony , so he can go on him lead rein , But yes I do think they prob wouldnt get a huge amount selling him , Think i will offer £500 .

I understand that you want your pony back,but if he has got cushions he isn,t worth £1000.I think the new owner is being very unrealistic thinking she will get that for him.She would be lucky to get anything for him at his age and especially with cushions which can be difficult to manage in the later stage of this disease .If i were her i would be glad that you are keen to take him back and give him back to you for a token gesture ie £200.You owe her nothing,she has had pony for 3 years.Stand your ground and don't be bullied.Goodluck i hope he comes home to you soon.
 
If you buy this pony back you have to think you will have him for life, he soudns like he means alot to you and I know for sertain that if the opotunity came up I would buy any of my older ponies back (if i wasn't too big for them) I still wouldn't pay more than £500ish though and I do think new owners would struggle to find that, especially for a 17yr old with poss cushions. Saying that, my friend has just sold a secion A mare thats 18 that was very naughty and couldn't come off the leadrein, couldn't be turned out with other ponies and couldn't be caught by children because would kick them for £1000. A pony is worth however much a person will pay!

I dont think the buyer would have a market for him, no one wants to buy potential problems so if she was open asnd honest the majority of people would be put off! I would offer to take him off her hands offer to pay transport costs and pay for any tack etc that comes with him.
The problem is 3 years ago he was 14 in work and was fit and healthy (being assumptive) 3 years later horses are not worth as much so take 30% off for credit crunch 30% off for added years and then a potential ailment you have very little else to offer her as marlyclay says £200 max token gesture?
 
Personally, I would think the seller would be pleased to find a long term happy home for him and be pleased with anything she was offered

Presumably this lady and her kids have had 3 happy years with this pony and if I were her I would just be really pleased that he would be going back to you for life. She knows that he will be well loved and looked after. If a pony has been really special then I don't think the money is important, just that it is cared for in it's last years. I think she should let you have him for less money than anyone else rather trying to pull on your heart strings and get as much as possible. But perhaps I'm just being really soft!
 
Thanks everyone , These comments have really helped me out , as I wasnt sure if i was right to think she is a little optimistic in her value of him , esp with the cushings . yes 3 years ago , he was in great condition , fit and in work , and so he must be worth less 3yrs down the line, with cushings , and unfit and he is older now. Thanks I will see what happens and keep you posted . x
