How would you re-school a shetland?
Mine has always been really well behaved when ridden, had nice paces, would happily work in an outline and jump a course easily.. but now after having a few young people riding him over the past year or 2 he's become really naughty as hes been allowed to get away with everything, like walking so slow hes almost standing, bucking when asked to move forward, rolling when small kids get on, really bad transitions, refusing to move out the gate to go on hacks and generally doing what he wants. He had his teeth done last week and his back and legs are fine.
Im just interested in finding ways to re-school him - and he's 8 :)
Thankss

Shetlands and kids are a bad mix,lol...we used to have one that could walk under the middle fence rail of the school, she learnt this and disposed of a few kiddies :D,they may be little but they are VERY clever, lol x

Do you have a small older kid who isn't afraid to tell the pony what to do. I know many years ago I used to get on the ponys which played up at my RS. It was great I got a few free rides out of it!

Either find a very light adult and pay them to ride him for a few sessions, or a good kid as has already been suggested. Failing that, long rein him round the school, paying particular attention to the napping to the gate issue and the bucking. I used to long rein one of mine, and then when my daughter got on if he started misbehaving, child off, long reins back on, and a good lunge/long rein session followed! You can also address the hacking issue with long reins, and the benefit is that you will be super fit too :)

And failing that, try whispering salami as well as pony pies. Works for my shetland x!

Lmao, I had the funniest image going through my head when I read that! Poor kiddies, but still funny!
