Re-Schooling or Professional Schooling- Away or Home?!

Will a horse remember if it had a bad journey in a trailer a week ago?

Im having my boy have a month of professional schooling with one lesson a week on top for me.

I have heard alot of people say they prefer them to go away and others prefer them to stay and the rider come to there yard.

What do others prefer?

Home is where the issues will arise so Iay getting the schooling done there. Taking a horse to a new yard can change it's persoanlity for a good fw weeks. They spend time schooling it in one mood, bring it home and most of the schooling comes undone.

I think much depends on what your options are.

I did this with a mare - which I sent to Argae House for two weeks, with me going down for two lessons a week on her as well. Which worked very well. The mare didn't need re-schooling, she needed schooling generally. I wasn't looking for quick fixes, however I did want someone other than me riding her who could better identify the problems, and get to grips with them quicker.

However, there is absolutely no point in spending your money on this if you're not going to get training yourself.

Who are you thinking of sending the horse to??

the idea i had in mind was basically the same as what you did amymay. I have two options: send him to ali and have one lesson a week on him or keep him at the yard have him schooled 3 days a week by a lovely experienced teacher also and i can have two lessons a week.

Last year I sent Chancer away for 3 weeks for some schooling - basically to do things I could not at home, ie ride out with several others and learn to go round with others in school ready for the showring.

Did him the world of good, he got the experience he needed plus ridden by a very good rider.

I have since then had a lesson every two weeks with her, she teaches me and also hops on him to (a) see how he is going and (b) give him a bit more schooling.

This has worked very well for us.

Depends if he needs schooling or you need teaching how to get the best out of him ?

If a) I'd send him to Ali where he would come back with the basics intact where you can carry on with it

If b) I'd have an instructor out to 'fine tune' you and him

Or i'd do C) Other - Go on a weeks intensive training and ride him yourself all week

weeks intensive schooling sounds good but thats not until september when we go to camp and i think we need more of it until then. I also think we *both* need help, together and apart.

I would go for option b

He could be the best schooled pony out there but you need to learn how to get the best from him so the more work you do together, the better imo. You have a better chance of progressing after that way I think.

I would have the schooling done at home. My instructor is my YO; I have weekly (or fortnightly) lessons with her at the yard, and she schools him for me when I ask for it too.

I wouldn't want to send something away for schooling, unless it was being totally reschooled or backed. IMO you'll get more out of keeping him at home, having someone come to school him and the same person doing some training with you on him too.

I'd go with the latter and keep him at home.
