Bit of a premature question given the time of year/weather but not being able to ride is leading me to all sorts of ponderings.......

My two share a 2 acre paddock year round. It doesnt get rested simply because they are both very good doers and it is good grass/land and it seems to hold its own. Its also well looked after topped, harrowed etc etc

However last year my two decided to make some horrid dust bowl near the front of the field so not only were they coming in covered in this dust (no amount of brushing could get it out!) but this patch has now extended a fair old way and is getting bigger!

So, next spring I was going to fence that bit off and try and sort it out. Any tips? It does just seem dust (well frozen mud) at the moment. What grass seed should I be putting onto it and when?

Order grass mixture that is called gateway recovery - it has some pretty resilient grasses in it. As to when - hard to say, because we don't know how long the winter will hold, generally, as soon as temperatures at night don't get frosty, grass grows at around 7C.

I did once try special paddock seed but it's quite expensive, the birds pinch most of it and I could never get it to 'take' anyway!

What I do now is sweep up all the seeds that collect under my haynets every few days and chuck them on the muddy gateways or bald areas. They re-seed themselves a treat and provided your hay is not full of docks or other weeds it's free.

thats why im wondering what sort of seed to use as rather than being bare soil its more like dust/mud now (if that makes any sense!!)

I'll have a look into the gateway recovery one.....im guessing as its a specialised one it will be ££££?

custard......

well ive been putting my hay sweepings onto it at the moment as its resembling a brown ice rink so you never know....come spring i might get a few shoots!
