I agree that he does need to be built up somewhat as he is under weight. With the right feeding & possibly using a balancer aswell, & some good quality working he will also get some muscle built upon his back end. It will take time but will be worth it.

The only thing that helped my horse put on weight and muscle was dodson and horrell build up .Poor thing was 350 kg when I bought him (he is a 16 h tb and was young) now he is 550 and maintains his weight well on this and speedi beet.I think your horse looks close to his ideal weight better than overweight. The d and h will help with topline and muscle.

Difficult to tell from the photos, but looks like he is a good weight but just needs muscle, particularly on his bottom. What is his flatwork like - does he work consistently in an outline and engage his hindquarters?

yeah, i am working on muscling him up.
he has good natural outline and i am working to get him to go forwards and be responsive to the leg. Now he is over that hump, we are now getting him off the forehand and to "come up" in front. he is finding this hard work, but i am getting good results as he is beginning to stretch his neck - we trotted the whole way around the arena with his nose on the ground

as i am also retraining him to jump we alternate between jumping, flatwork and hacking to keep him fit. the flatwork however has the highest ratio.
he is consistently in an outline when i am asking him to work properly after his stretch. and he is beginning to take the weight on his hindquarters, and we are starting to build muscle up there with straping as well.

thanks for replies!
not sure i can get D&H but i might try outshine as a supplement, as the food here is very expensive for a bag

i love his coat! it is incredibly shiney...

That sounds good - if you keep working him like that consistently I'm sure you will find that he will start to muscle up and develop a good topline

Only_me, my friend has a TB (ex racer) that she struggles to keep weight on. Last April, we moved our boys together to a really fab new yard and since then, the TB has blossomed. He pretty much looks like your boy and his mum is very happy with him...my understanding is that's what TBs look like. Please don't tell me your boy is a gypsy cob!!!!!

i think he looks v well for a tb-you should look at my boy-2 big feeds a day and still showing his ribs!!yeh needs building for muscle but otherwise looks lovely!!You cant see his ribs, and they are meant to be felt but not seen which looks exactly what he is like

Defnot underweight just lacking muscle as others have said.

My 16.2hh is 630kg, he is a WB and chunky build, but can feel his ribs, muscle weighs more than fat so they say.

Have to agree with most, he is not under weight just needs a bit more muscle. Think people like their horses on the bigger size! I don't, I would rather see them a bit on the lean side IMPO. ( our vets like them like that too

I'm no expert but he doesn't look underweight to me, just in need of more muscle? George is 16.3 and currently weighs 560kg and I think he is slightly too round, but ok as we're going into winter.

Definately not underweight!!!photos do not do any justice, too dark!!He looks fine,i wouldnt worry!!!
smile.gif
Cant see his ribs and in the 2nd pic he is carrying more than enough weight!!!Cant comment on topline as in the 2nd pic it looks fine, just he is relaxed!!!The 1st pic is taken on the wrong angle in the dark so his neck blends into the darkness!!!I have numerous pics like your 1st pic and my boy always looks like a camel, lol,he far from it and has topline to give away, lol!!!take some in daylight and ask again!!!
smile.gif
I like him!!!
