Re slowing down fast drivers - Would you get in trouble?

I believe it is against the law to impersonate a police officer and wearing a tabard that said POLICE on the back would count as that.

Yes you would get in trouble. I had a hi-vis once that said on the back 'Does my bum look big on this ?' It worked a treat at slowing traffic down. I had to stop wearing it when a car pulled up beside me, wound his window down and called over 'no it looks lovely' I should of been flattered but it was a mates dad - creepy !

what about this? Its Equisafety and has been approved but is quite a trick of the eye for oncoming motorists?

I *think* that should be fine. Also ex-police officer kit up for sale as usually had the police identifiers removed and plays a similar trick on the eye by looking like police uniform but not being one!

A friend of mine who is in the police got me one of their jackets but only on the strict understanding that the word 'police' had to be removed.

My friend wears one (her husband's a police officer so i assume that's where she got it from). It doesn't have 'police' on the back but still has the bits on the shoulders.

I have an ex-police hi viz jacket

Obviously, 'police' bit has been removed/covered but it still has the blue checks on it, so at a quick glance looks like a police jacket. I've been asked several times if I'm a mounted officer and I notice a difference in the traffic when I wear it...certainly a good buy :)

I have one, and started a thread on it today

They are absolutely fantastic - it really does slow them down. You must ensure that it doesn't have the word 'police' on it anywhere....but everything else is absolutely fine.

I even got the policewomans handwipes and sweets in the pocket of mine! :)

It would be illegal if it had police on it. But if the drivers are so bad that you'd need to actually impersonate the police to ride your horse, should you be riding on the roads?

Some of us don't have a choice

We must use the roads if we want to take the horses out

We also have a 'millionaires row' about half a mile away. Most of them are footballers and the likes of... they slow down for no one, their wives are worst for it!

And just a thought - as most of the "general public" think police horses are some sort of strange bombproof (literally!) quasi machines would a police style tabard actually DISCOURAGE them from treating you with respect?
