Re Super Kat - can afford it but don't buy it?

Gosh, what a 'nice' thread this has turned out to be.

So long as horses are well cared for regardless of cashflow then I couldn't give a [****]. Not about to talk to you guys about how much money I have/haven't either.

*shakes head*

My horse has what she needs, It must be safe and comfortable, anything else is a bonus. I think there is a lot of snobbery, both from people who can afford everything and from those who worry about what others thinks so try to appear to have everything.

If you like to spend on your horse then do so. Like many others I have children, a mortgage, land to maintain. We all have different priorities.

Ok... little shocked that your telling me that not giving to charity and spending it all black and gold is good!

[/ QUOTE ]

I think you will find that at no time have I said that. In fact I have said that my family gives a lot of money to charity.
I have all my things because I want them, I certainly don't have them to show off to other people as I don't care what other people think. Wherever I take my horse I want her to look nice but I never expect all my 'fancy things' to help me do well at shows. So I do not see your problem.
Your argument doesn't make sense - I do not even know what you are saying.........

OMG, I have just spent ages reading this and almost p***** myself laughing.

If someone wants to spend money on their horse why shouldnt they? If they work hard to earn that money what gives anyone the right to say what they should spend it on.

Its each to their own isnt it? I spend a lot on my horse but its compensated by the fact that I dont really go out much.

It doesn't make me a better rider than a person who chooses not to do this, nor does it mean my horse is more loved - its just thats how I get my pleasure.

Im the same, I dont go out much, my OH works such long hours, and I love buying my horses new things, whether it be a new feed bucket or a new rug.
Before I had my own horses i would spend a fortune on clothes, I never buy 'normal' clothes anymore now and dont miss it, I much prefer spending it on the horses, they even had their own advent calendars over Xmas

My point wasn't that people shouldn't spend there money how they like... thats kinda stupid... My point was that i think its kind of sad that people who have money spend £1000s on crap, not just horses, shoes, children etc.... Example: children.... I grew up in make like ted baker, fcuk, gap etc.... but heyho parents way of spending it..... I know mums who spent £1000s on a jacket for thier little girl alone.... I think that was kinda of sad..... This post has become pretty stupid all i was saying was i think obsesive spending is sad... just what i think. As for the birdle, it was a pesent, and the charity thing, if it would cost 3x as more to get a t/o rug in green *my lads 'colour'* and would get normal colour and put the money saved to better use, eg charity, but thats just how i feel my money would be better spent.

right i am 16 and have to pay for enverything my horses need so i am the stingyest (sp) b*ggar you will ever know i have got a synthetic endurance bridle, synthetic saddle,my western tack cost me £100 but with bridle, bit, clinch, saddle cloth and that was second had i brought second hand rubber matting £125 for 4 6x4 mats which cuts the cost of bedding which is £1 for a black binliner full from a place down the road i live in "bargin pages" where i went to buy a head collor for about£4 and a couple of other bits and bobs and ended up buying the lot for £40 (exersise sheet, lunging caverson, side reins, full set of brushing boots,girth,2 headcollors, flyfring, over reach boots, manger and a saddle cloth) the woman had colour co ordinated her horse so they were all blue or red. finally i brought 1/2 chaps from aldi for £8 a grooming kit, headcollor (fluffly nose and head piece),whip from netto, a fleece rug(blue with red binding) and matching blue bandages from tesco. sorry its so long. my second horse (the chestnut) uses bits and bobs that i have ended up with other than the above i am not going to list them!!!dont worry lol. Me and my appy met prince edward if any of you didn't know already i took her onto the field in her tesco rug a matching blue and read head collor and lead rope and rode infront of him on my second hand western tack and then when he was leaving he came over to take opne last look and i had changed her tack to her synthetic stuff which came with her when i brought her while riding in my second hand show caldene(sp) show jacket which cost me £20 so if i can show my pony off to a member of the royal family in tesco, netto, aldi and second hand gear i am sure no one should have a problem with it.

i have to agree, i have nice stuff but a heck of a lot of it comes from second hand tack sales and e-bay etc!! i bought a £60 stable rug from e-bay for £20 a lovely leather whp saddle second hand for £200 etc etc, the only things i have bought new are long leather boots and a show jacket as my size is hard to buy second hand, although both purchases were expensive they are top quality and will give years of service, it always amazes me the amount of people who buy new rugs every year due to fashion, but at least that leaves many of last years colours for us bargain hunters!!

My horse has everything she needs, to the point where I cant think of anything else she could possibly want. I am now not going to go out and buy things just for the sake of it. I like my horse to look nice and she wants for nothing. That is just the way I keep my horse. Her things dont match but who cares, they are good quality and I am a firm believer that quality lasts.

If people want to spend money on their horses then why shouldnt they? They work for it so its up to them how it gets spent.

Ah well you see,
i'm one of those that doesn't have a life and wear crap clothes, whilst my horses have always got the best.
Only because i hate clothes shopping, i'm lanky and can never find clothes that fit, it's much easier to buy horse stuff!!! As long as your earning it, it's up to you how you spend it!!
Jo
PS. yes that is me you see in Tescos in chaps and dirty jeans.

my tack all matches, ie saddles match the colour or the bridles (all brown), but appart from that nothing else matches at all. The only things that do match are things ive got in 2 for 1 offers or buy one get one 1/2 price. 2 of mine have matching show rugs because the 2nd one was free and i have a very beautiful and expensive show rug for anouther one of mine, it doesnt match anything else but it was a gift.
I'd rather buy second hand quality then new tat, but im not going near 2nd had tat. My bridles and stirrup leathers are new as i dont trust how 2nd hand stuff has been treated after a pair of 2nd hand good quality stirrup leathers snapped for no reason when i was jumping. Ive 3 2nd hand saddles and 1 new one as that pony was an absolute pain to fit and had to have an altered tree to make it fit.
Provided it fits, is good quality (ie not cheap imported leather that is going to snap if you breath on it the wrong way) and is safe, it doesnt particularly matter if it matches or not to me. I dont personaly like webbing or synthetic bridles or saddles, but if it was a choice between a cheap leather bridle or a good quality webbing i'd go for the webbing and id never ever sneer at someone who made a choice like that.
I like spending money on my horses and whilst my parents are paying why not? but im not going to go stupid with it and i know im going to have to cut back after i leave uni.
