I've just had a call from my neighbour saying a red car pulled up between her house and mine & was pointing at one of my horses, her daughter was outside with dog & went in & told her mum, daughter knows nothing of these posts on here re the suspicious people. Now, it may be something or nothing.

A question for all:

Do you think horses are safer in their field or in their stables. I would defo bring mine in at night if I thought it was safer. At the end of the day, if these guys want to steal I have no idea what we can do to stop them.

What are your thoughts on safety please, how can we maximise their safety?

I'm sure it was coincidental but hey, you never know. Right - field it is then. Thought maybe they wouldn't bother if they're in a stable as stables close to the house, walking them on concrete, you'd hear them, etc, etc.

I heard they were at Whaplode show last time - not sure if that is just scaremongering as person who told me is no reliable.

We've got all neighbours keeping an eye out to be safer and all are at home or in fields (farmers) all day

Did have a chap with an irish accent stop in the driveway last week and ask OH if any of our lorries are for sale (have old V plate Bedford horsebox on drive along with M plate MAN to swap box onto) - he was very interested in Betty Bedford

Edit to add - ours in at night, stable block less than 10m from bedroom so would hear them

May just be coincidence but went up my yard earlier to drop some feed off and heard a car pull up then turn round in the car park (nothing unusual about that as we share car park with antique centre).
Just walking out of feed room and saw a blue Nissan Navara (first part of reg RX04 didnt catch the rest) parked beside the top field. So wander down slowly and there was a youngish bloke taking pictures of the horse in that field with a digital camera, as he was taking the pictures a lady had went in the field and lifted up his rug and looked underneath him (might of been cheaking if he was entire??). I shouted can I help you and they scramble back into the car a speed of

f!!!
Have informed the police who said they will keep a lookout.
All the fields are now locked up and the main gate going to the fields has now got a lock on it both ends.
Have made sure that all the electric fence is working and put big notes in tack room to keep it switched on (it is connected to the mains).
Thinking of taking the handles of the elecy fence gate way and doing a continous loop so you have to turn the fence off at the mains to be able to get horses out, or risk getting a hell of a big zap!!!!
It was probally just people taking an intrest in the horses and not wanting to nick them but Its better to be safe then sorry!!!!!!!

mmmm...........wandering into a field and lifting the horses rug, sounds suspicious to me! Could she have been looking for a freezemark? Crikey, if we weren't paranoid before we will be by the time this lot have finished on their travels! Im afraid Ive got all the locks planned for tonight! I will leave ours out as htey hate being approached even by us in the dark so I would hope that they would be worse with strangers. Fortunately the road frontage is well filled with hawthorn and post and rail behind, no gates so the only access is through house drive. I would hope that the dogs would make so much noise we would be alerted, they would have a mastiff at their throats and the JRT at their ankles and a very, very angry me armed with a pick axe handle. It is very scary though!

Id say safer out in the field, but then you get the odd b*stard who comes along and cuts the fence letting the horses out onto the road which has happened round me a couple of times.

But Id rather mine were out where they can run away if need be. I also always worry about fire in stables as well!

Blimey - feel worse now reading that!! I doubt I'll get much sleep tonight - think I may leave the dogs out tonight!! Though probably worry they'd get nicked as well.

You can put locks and god knows what else on but 9 times out of 10 when they're nicking trailers and the likes, they cut away the fencing furthest point away so you don't see or hear anything.

Does anybody know out of all these sightings have any horses actually been stolen?
