I have a 17.3 ex race horse/ point to point horse named Sam I have had him for around 6 months, I have jumped him once but have was very hard to control and bolted at every jump I have been told that is was because he has been only been trained to jump at a full gallop, but because he has problems my vet has said I cant get a stronger bit has any one got any tip on how to re train him?? thanks scoobie-sam

Hi, lots of questions!! What's his flatwork like? Does he rush poles too? How experienced are you? What bit is he in, and did you get him directly out of training?

he flat work is brill in walk trot and canter, and yes he rushes poles, he goes from a simple walk to a gallop at the sight of a pole on the floor, I am quiet and experienced rider and I have been doing dressage/jumping on my other horse, Sam is working in a loose ring snaffle but I have tried him in a stronger bit but he ended up bucking me off several times, I did not get him straight out of training but after he cam out of racing he was put on a riding school so he did not jumping that's when I got him.
thanks scoobie-sam

you can try doing some gridwork but if he is out of control bolting maybe try lunging him starting with trotting poles and working your way up. i had similar problems but i borrowed a pair of rollar reins for a few weeks and really went back to basics and started fresh. having worked with racers i can confirm that they have been taught to do it all on their own, i had quite a bit of problems with striding as he would see different stride to me and try to come up early...he stood off 2 and half strides yesterday!! they are also taught to brush through fences so be prepared to knock alot down when you first start!! i forgot to say, it may be best if you get his back/neck/teeth looked at as he may be rushing from pain that only appears when jumping. my old boy done this but by time we realised it was to late and he has now been retired through injury to his stiffle joint :( wishing you all the luck
