I know this is a more general enquiry rather than a specific CR but I know I will get well balanced responses here! (also posted in Veterinary but a bit more traffice here!)
Has anyone ever done this?! ..and if so do they know where they stood for insurance purposes?! I had a pony vetted last week...shoes in a dreadful state and poss struck into itself at end. Fine till last bit of 5 stage vetting when lunged on the circle on the hard = lame one way

Originally thought NO but following discussions with vet may be worth reconsidering (ie cld be foot imbalance?) and repeating this stage now pony reshod as it ticks all the other boxes!
So questions are really - I thought it would be reasonable to renegiotiate price to cover costs of paying out for another vet visit...does that sound reasonable given state shoes were in? (Delayed vetting due to weather conditions - shoes Ok when tried but been let go - suppose they were banking on the sale?)
Also does anyone know where I may stand re insurance if all was OK - I can't lie and say no vetting was done...would I be expected to have a whole new 5 stage done when it was just this bit we wanted to re check?
Thanks guys!

Pilfer failed on this exact thing- we never revetted as could see how improved he was after being shod.

i got him down from £6k to £4.5k.

we insured with NFU and they didn't exclude anything.

Thanks Millitiger - thats good to know! I am also with NFU but when I rang them anon. to ask for general info they said they wouldn't insure for anything if it hadn't passed a vetting! Now I am being paranoid and wondering if I shouldn't have done that and could be traced by my tel no. but I can't do decieftful!! Also if I can't insure thats another cost / risk consideration! Maybe they have tightened things up?
So with your price reduction sounds like it would be reasonable to allow for the vets added costs? I suppose I could easily see it worked myself but wanted a bit more certainty....and being hugely paranoid some comeback in case it had been slipped a little bute!

When I insured with the NFU, they wouldn't even give me a quote without me sending the vetting certificate first!

If you are worried about the horse being given bute then have bloods run.

When we sold our pony we had a nightmare with the vet, when he arrived he advised it wasn’t 14.2 and that he wanted a height certificate before he would vet her as she was 15hh at least!!! Got her shoes off got height cert at 146cm!!! so easily under, then he came back to vet her all for the original fee, she had 5 stage done and did everything up to flexion test which he did last. We had to walk her out onto road to have a level surface to trot her on. Walking down the lane she stood on a stone (no shoes on now) and went slightly lame! Vet said he would halt vetting there, give us a week to get shoes on her and he would come back again at no extra charge.

We got her shod again at our cost even though she had only just been done before he insisted she needed a height cert. Vet came back a week later and did just the flexion tests which she passed so he gave her a 5 stage cert which no failures. Can you talk to the vets involved and ask if they can do similar? If they change a bit extra I would negotiate this off the price of the pony.

No agree re bloods - would have them done and thats another reason for asking vet to re-examine.
Think all the insurers are tightening up...don't think I tech. need a vets cert as not high value but they ask if it was done and if so they want to see it! No point lying IMO or it might come back and bite me on the bum!

Thats interesting CF and what a pain in the bum it sounded with your sale!! Glad it all worked out in end. My vets suggested I got someone local to re check as their call out fee was well over £100 in add'n to vetting charges as it was well out of their area...but I may well sound them out about whats yours did now I know I may have insurance difficulties otherwise.
We are not talking an equine superstar here but just want a little bit of reassurance that we are not buying something that will quickly become a field ornament!

Was it anything to do with the way he was being lunged? I know my boy nods like a right donkey if he isn't sent forward on the lunge......

No don't think so JoG. She had lunged OK earlier and then tanked off a bit so coupled with the shoes could have knocked herself then as well. She was quite obviously lame one way and not the other

we insured Pilfer for £4.5k and had loss of use.
i bought him about 5 years ago so i suppose could have tightend up but i only took the LOU off last year.

he was about 4/10 lame going to the left but passed the rest of the vetting with flying colours, best wind the vet had heard in ages etc.

also, since we bought him he has done 5 years of BE eventing and won and been placed many, many times.

Hmm, I bought 15 months ago and insure with NFU. I didn't have a vetting done.

Wondering if it's horses over a certain value that they insist a vetting is done

Yes I think they do insist on vettings over a certain value but also that if you have a pre purchase vetting done regardless of value they want to see it anyway prior to accepting to insure. So as I see it you either lie and say you didn't have it done...or you give them a copy and they won't insure it!
I agree with you millitiger - your horse was obv. fine and has gone onto have a v successful career. It could be something and nothing with this pony...its just taking that risk of it being something more sinister than foot imbalance!
Its disappointing this couldn't have been eliminated with a decent set of feet at the initial vetting...now I am still unsure of how much further to take it!! Will call vet now I think!
Thanks for all your advice and comments - v helpfull!

I had this almost exact thing with George. My vet didn't give me a "fail" certificate, just halted the vetting. I had to pay for a new one so a pricey vetting, but was worth it because he flew through 2nd time and 18 months later no issues at all!
