Has anyone's horse ever had a reaction to a flu jab before? How long does it last for?
Sailor had his 6 week one on Friday and his neck has a pretty impressive lump on it and he has a temperature today. He is also feeling rather sorry for himself and is rather subdued. :(
I phoned the on call vet to see if there was anything we could do and been advised 2 sachets of bute, one tonight and one in the morning and then see what happens.
He is currently tucked up in bed with a medium weight rug on! Who said Cobs were hardier breeds then TBs?

My mare reacted the same as your horse, massive swollen lump on her neck then she started to go a bit wobbly and ill looking. Rang the vets they just said its a reaction and occasionally it happens. She was fine 2 days later but a little sore on that side for a while!

My mare reacted to her flu jab last year with a swollen sore neck couldn't even put her head down bless her!! Had to keep her in for 3 days til she was able to put her head down again!
Vet said to give her bute for a couple of days which seemed to help.

3 of mine got lumps a few years ago after flu + tet took a few days to settle they couldn't reach the floor for 2 days so now they have them in their bums

even have sticky labels on front of passports just in case vet forgets

My YO's horse had a very bad reaction- very rare but possible- it started with a big lump on her neck, and then when we went to turn her out a couple of days later, she could hardly walk-it was like all of her muscles had stiffened up-almost like what happens with us when we get the flu and just seize up. She was like this for a few weeks, and the lump, which kept her quite stiff down that side remained there for 6weeks.

I haven't heard of any other horse getting this bad a reaction-but it is possible and was awful, she was out of action for nearly 2months! However on her next jab(necessary as she was registered showjumping mare) she had no reaction!

Mine hadn't had jabs before I bought her - she had her first one after her vetting, second at mine and a week later had a small chicken egg-sized lump on her neck. Vet said don't be ridiculous, it wasn't anything we did (it blooming well was, no other explanation). Third one fine, but each year when she has her boosters she gets really under the weather for about five days, and her neck stiffens up worse each year. She can't put her head to the ground and is generally miserable. She had it in her bum this year and went lame behind

She still has the lump on her neck, and it's now twice the size it was. New vet hasn't a clue what it is but thinks the jab may possibly have caused it as she reacts so badly every time.

I'll be glad when she retires and I don't have to put her through the jab each year!

i have one that takes a bad reaction, one of the vets is a homeopathic vet and i had to call him out after one flu jab as he couldnt move his neck was sweating but shivering at the same time and really feeling sorry for him self - vet gave him rescue remedy and in 10mins he was back to normal and munching his tea and haylage - i was well shocked that it did the trick
since then the vet says to give him some thuja tablets for a few days in the run up to the jab date on the day of the jab and the following day too - he still takes a bit of a reaction but more a swelling around the injection site rather than the sweating etc
hope your horse is ok soon

Warning! My mare had same symptoms folollowing flu jab.. Lump on site of jab didnt really change however she showed signs of tyeup, her legs would blow up overnight. Eventually hd vet out when she seemed uncomfortable putting head to floor to eat and turns out she had a huge abcess 3 inches wide 3 inches deep. The vet had to drain it, not nice, not pretty. Recovered very well with antibiotics and regular flushing of the wound. Hope for your sake this isnt the case!

Glad I didn't read this last night, had a bad enough night's sleep anyway lol

Been to see him this morning and was greeted by a massive hello and a rather impatient ponio for not paying him enough attention!! He stuffed his face and was hugely alert compared to what he was yesterday thankfully! The swelling is about 50% the size it was yesterday and has full movement of the neck. :D
I also attempted to take him for some grass but apparently my coat smelt way to good to eat out of the muddy patch on the ground
Hopefully should return back to normal fully very soon :D:D

My field mates horse reacted to his recent flu/tet jab recently , he actually went lame ( well was walking short on his near front ) , the more he moved around the better he became but it is a worry at the time..
