reaction to soya oil, corn oil instead?

I put my boy on alfa a oil to try and put some weight/condition on. He is also on simple systems top nosh, which contains linseed, and lucie pellets. He can't have sugar/starch. The alfa a oil has put some weight on but has made him sharp, spooky and generally too much! This resulted in him bronking on sunday and me landing on my head!

So, any thoughts as a replacement to alfa a oil? has anyone else had a reaction to alfa a oil, soya oil? Would corn oil be less heating, adding it myself? He was on simple systems green gold lucerne chaff, thinking of putting him back on it as need him chilled but don't want him to lose weight.

Help!

If he has not been on Alfa-a before I would say that it is this that is causing his uncharacteristic fizziness as I have known several to react this way on it rather than the soya oil.

I would try swapping him to hi-fi (lite) as this tends to be much less heating (lower alfa alfa content) and then just add oil to this. alternatively or in addition to this I can highly recomend speedi-beet as a good bulk builder and fibre source.

I would question whether he is getting a balanced diet at present and wonder whether he would benefit from a general purpose vit and min supp like equivite.

I do hope it was just a one off and your head isn't too sore!

My two are on just normal veg oil (which is rapeseed). New tb ex racehorse has a very shiney coat due to it, cant really tell with Trig as he is clipped!

Alfa a oil in the red bag is like rocket fuel to mine, so I don't feed it. Try dengie molasses free which is what mine are on and ordinary pure corn oil from the supermarket.

mine cant take alfalfa either. She was shaking from head to toe like a kid on E numbers - she couldnt take it.

I changed her onto fast fibre, she is on micronised linseed and Copra meal.

She also has no starch no sugar diet.

The simple systems feed is all alfalfa and he has been on that for 4 months so don't think its the alfa, think it must be the energy from the oil. He is normally unspooky, unsharp, and is now all of those. He has put muscle on but I need to be safe. So far this week this fall has cost me...one new hat, one body protector, one chiropractor session for me and a physio visit for him as he galloped home for two miles across ploughed fields. Oh, and a new bridle and new boots and he lost his on way home. Bloody expensive animal. What is this copra stuff? Would the alfa mollasses free be beteer or avoid soya oil totally?

The point of oil is that is non heating, so I would have thought the Alfa oil is to blame. It wouldn't be the first time. It depends on the quantities of oil you are trying to get into him, with an ESPM diet the key is the quantity of oil fed as much as cutting out starch. Soya oil & corn oil are the most calorific, corn oil is the most palatable.

Mine is fed on soaked hi fi nuts, 500ml Mazola corn oil from the supermarket, 2 table spoons of salt 1:2 LoSalt & selenium & Vit E. He has wintered really well & events on this.

I'd try corn oil - I swear by it, for condition and I also paint it on my horses' hooves and my farrier can't believe the difference in them from head to toe. Cheap from supermarket and doesn't seem to fizz them up at all.

Do you mean hi fi molasses free or alfa a molasses free?

It's dengie hi-fi molasses free, it's 27% fibre, only 2% starch and only 4.5% sugar, mine are on it and not lit up at all, also the pure corn oil is fab, cheap and very palatable. Mine is also on EPSM diet as she tyes-up.

Sorry to be thick, but what does EPSM stand for?

Thank you for all replies. May try the hi fi mollasses free or just go back to the green gold. He has hopefully been sorted by the physio as he pulled his back on his gallop home. Back on tomorrow. Wish me luck!
