My horse has a cough, possibly due to allergy. The vet prescribed ventrapulmin. sorry cant spell it. 2 days after starting on this medication, i came down to the yard to find her whole backend and stomach muscles in spasm - really badly. she was perfectly calm, temp normal, eating etc but got vet straight away. She thinks its a reaction to the medication so we have stopped it, also taken bloods to be on the safe side. Has anyone ever experienced this before ? It was quite severe and lasted well over an hour (although could have been going on longer before i found her). I find it strange it would take 2 days for her to react so strongly to a medication?
any thoughts appreciated..Everything else was as normal as could be, even her movement was fine.

We had some time ago 2 horses in different stables reacting like you described to Ventipulmin. One was hapy hacker another World Cup SJ competitor. Both of them started to show symptoms in 2-3 days after the treatment has began. Both recovered fully after stopping administration of drugs.
We foud out in official manufacturers data that:
"Ventipulmin Syrup.... provides bronchodilating properties with minimum effect on the cardiovascular system. "
and
"Ventipulmin Syrup should not be used.... or in horses suspected of having cardiovascular impairment. "

We assumed that this type of drugs (there are some other brands which are not available in UK) does show impact on cardiovascular system, together with all good effects they provide. So be carefull to observe the horse when on medication.
Hope this helps, all the best for your horse
