I have put this down to washing powder?

Any advice on what to do/how long before it goes?

Obviously not ridden him this eve and have brought his white home to wash (without powder).

Sorry. Can't really offer any advice. It sounds as though he needs some sort of "soothing cream" but nothing springs to mind. It might be best just to do nothing at all and wait for the lumps to go down. Doing anything more might make it worse.

It sounds identical to what my horse got a few years back, we nicknamed him the spotty teenager at the time! It was the washing powder and now I only wash his things in sensitive skin type products.
I just made sure the area was kept clean and dry, the lumps went scabby and then gradually it returned to normal and he was fine again in a couple of weeks.
In the meantime I used a very soft numnah and washed it after each use.
Hope your boy returns to normal soon
