My dog has been suffering with her paw pads, they have been opening, splitting, bleeding. Vet thought they were burns oerhaps from grit, gave her anti inflammatories & antibiotics but no change. Took her to a different vet for a second opinion, she also said looked like burns, gave her steroids. They healed a bit but nothing major. Took her back, have done a blood test but came back clear, biopsy was taken & vet also found a swelling in her mouth, results from her mouth & feet both show reactive histiocytosis.

Taking her in tomorrow for a strong long lasting steroid injection as the high dosage of tablets were making her sick. Has anyone got any experience of this? I'm really worried about her. Thanks

Well my rottie recently lost her battle against histiocytic sarcoma which is one of the histiocytic disorders. Not sure too much on reactive histiocytosis but perhaps referral to an oncologist may be a good idea? Xxx

Is that a cancerous one that your routine had? The Internet info is so varied it doesn't really help a lot. They are still doing tests on the biopsies as there was a lot of bacteria found. This one is like an auto immune thing.. But the cause is unknown & if they manage to suppress her immune system it could go away, come back or stay for the rest of her life. She's a 7 yr old bichon frise.

Yeah it was a very aggressive malignant form. She initially presented with a haemolytic anaemia and they found it to be secondary to the histiocytic sarcoma, she did well on steroids for four months, then she became severely anaemic again, the cancer affected her bone marrow and stopped steroids working and red blood cells being made. Yeah was just reading reactive histiocytosis too, varying prognosis, confusing. Have a good chat with your vet and see what they say. I'll keep everything crossed for u x

That's awful!! It's so annoying because she has hardly any of the symptoms, all websites show a skin disorder around the eyes, nose etc, but her issue is mainly her pads & most info sites don't even mention this. She's happy, playful, eating.. You wouldn't even know she wasn't right.. Except if you tie her cone off her head which I do in the evening to give her a break when I can keep an eye on her she will try t every opportunity to bite & lick her paws.
