Reading over Christmas

As there is no where to go over Christmas I am hoping to do some reading while I have a bit of time off. Any recommendations?

Quite wide tastes, Thrillers, Horror but not too scary , not too keen on romance.. like Susan Hill, James Long etc

You and Hidden Bodies are very good books! There’s also a TV series on Netflix which is awful...

Firstly the Radio 2 book club on Facebook are brilliant for recommendations

I’ve just read Shuggie Bain which I enjoyed, I’ve also read all the Cormoran Strike books by Robert Galbraith, very enjoyable

Two horsey reads that I've enjoyed are:
Tschiffely's Ride - a great true-life adventure.
Xenophon - The Art of Horsemanship translated by Morris Morgan. This is quite short and surprisingly modern!

I'm also reading the first Cormoran Strike book by R. Galbraith (J.K. Rowling) and really liking it so far.

I always recommend this one because it’s such a great read
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova .
I read this I got so caught up I could stop reading into the night when I finished I had the sensation you get in the cinema when a absorbing film ends .Its a very very classy vampire story .
Also A Painted House by John Grisham very different to his usual books and by far the best .
Nantaniels Nutmeg by Giles Milton a factual novel about the spice trade .

Mexican Gothic- lovely gothic horror (mild) set in Mexico. An interesting take on classic tales.

The Terror- a fiction story based on the real lost Franklin expedition to the North West passage. A long read but good.

The only good Indians- a horror story based around Native Americans and their culture. Very good and different.

I have asked for two books this Christmas. The Sentinel by Lee Child (have all his books in the Jack Reacher series) and The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman.

The Orkney Trilogy by Clare Carson. Mixture of spy story and Celtic history and beautifully written. Not often I read a series of books twice.

I love the Jean Auel books, a very long read even for me and I read fast. I kept getting impatient for the next in the series to be published.

I'm having a lovely time re reading all my late mothers Miss Read books.
I read them originally when a bored teen, and it's rare I re read any book, but I'm enjoying them

A book which I have recently re-read and I know both my daughters enjoyed is The Secret History by Donna Tartt. It's a really clever intellectual book but you don't need to be either clever or intellectual to enjoy it. Everyone I know who has read it, has loved it.

Recently read Conn Iggulden’s series of books about the Mongals. Historical fiction but excellently written and really gripping! He also did a series of books on the Roman Empire which were good too.

OH and I had an evening in front of the fire reading Kazuo Ishiguro. Her book was The Buried Giant, mine was Never Let Me Go. Both great books, but I wouldn't suggest Never Let Me Go if you're feeling a bit down already.

I love them, have them on audible and every year I listen to No Holly for Miss Quinn and The Christmas Mouse as a tradition

Loved "Never let me go" I couldn't put it down although it is very sad. Thoroughly recommend!

Like a ghost storey at Christmas the best are M R James some of Dickens. New one I got last year The Huntsman at The Gate and Strange Stories of the Chase
