Ready for WINTER?!!

I know it's July... BUT every year I think I'll sort myself out and be prepeared for winter, then before I know it October/ November turns up and bites me in the a$$!

I want to be ready for it this year and have done or plan to do the following;

repair all fences extra extra well!
Mend, wash, re-proof rugs
stock up on O/R boots (jack loses about a pair a wk!)
creasote(sp) the stables and shelter
Get the generator fixed

been tring to save some money each month for feed, shavings and hay (not had much luck yet though!) Is there anything I've missed? Do any of you plan like this? I'm just sick of been skint all winter and totally sick of been out in the dark mending fences etc

LOL I know how you feel - I ordered a load of new fence posts today cos I'm sick of the plastic ones snapping in the wind and I'm getting rope to replace the tape!

I also bought my winter rugs (at last years prices!). All my rugs have been to the menders and are back.

Last thing I need to organise is a new field gate and a couple of loads of hardcore for the gateways.

It's truly depressing that it's only July and I'm this organised about it - scary

Electric fencing is the answer. i lost count of the hours i used to spend mending post and rail...
have Ariat Grasmeres from last winter, and am therefore not dreading this winter quite so much!
had all rugs washed and reproofed in spring/summer.
am trying to cut down on horse numbers, that would make winter a LOT easier, but prob not going to happen.
haven't got any hay in yet, hope local farmer is as good as his word.
i HATE winter too...
 
Looks like i'm way behind, scotsmare and kerilli; your well ahead of me! I have electric fencing, I really like it but the white post seem the bend and snap allot, I've tried to reinforce it with a wooden post every 20 foot or so!

Where would you recommend buying new rugs from? Where the cheapest? Also, how do you dry the bl00dy things without going to hell and back?

Man I wish it was summer 12 month of the year, I've got myself in a bad mood now just thinking about it!

My shelter got blown over two years ago, scared me to death, can't imagine what would of happened if they'd of been in it
 
I bought a load of rugs from equestrian clearance - so long as you're not bothered about having the latest 'fashion' in rugs then you'll get a good deal!

I only turn my horses out for 4 hours a day in winter and only then if it's not p*ssing down with rain (have wussy warmbloods) so they tend not to get soaked through.....

I have the same problem with posts snapping hence why I'm about to sink a load of wooden ones in....
 
I'm already thinking lets move the horses off the field near the stable to let the grass grow wild for winter coming.

If you know which rug you want (make and type) just Google it and you will get every supplier who has it for sale. It takes five minutes to open the pages and check the prices but it is really worth as you'll get the best bargain in no time.
 
I buy winter rugs at this time of year because they're often in the sale...

I've just got rubber matting and have yet to have the stable door done etc...

field is fine, post and rail fencing all in good nick...

My muck boots are still waterproof and warm so no need to buy new boots.

Need to have my clippers serviced / blades sharpened, and buy an exercise sheet.
 
Still waiting for summer!!! Muddy patch at the entrance to the field is like a bog.

But got lovely hay in June and once I have that under cover I feel I can relax. Doing a good check and list of jobs is a great idea tho and think I'll do it.
 
Well, never mind me getting ready for winter. I noticed last night with horror that my little horse is already getting rid of her summer coat!!!!!!

AND, she still has some old winter coat left!
 
eek don't remind me about winter! MUST send Maiden's big rug off for mending, she's going to need it this winter if she's being ridden. I have a 7' and a 6'6" so whether she's fat or thin I have a rug to fit so that's not a problem. Need to sort out shavings, get more rubber mats, more hay, more electric fence posts... need to clean and treat the wooden stables, get last winter's wrecked fencing repaired, get the concrete bloke back to sort out the mess he made of our yard... ARGH
Breathe, it's July, still another couple of months to go before we have to panic!

I noticed that with my exmoor over the last few days and he also didn't shed all his winter coat, this year.

Fencing wise, I'm not prepared at all, but it's inside fencing, not the perimeter, so not too concerned. Hay is all stored up and I have the joint supplements already. They don't have rugs,so I'm ok on that score, too! I just need to rest a paddock, if this poxy weather would sort itself out.
