Ready-to-back youngsters?

Hello. I'm wondering if there's a market for youngsters who are lunging, seen traffic, well handled, met farriers, etc., and are now ready to be backed and ridden away. I'm good at all that stuff on the ground, but not confident enough on board for the next stage, and was thinking about getting one as a project (probably pony as easier for me to keep). However, I could only consider it if I'll be able to sell it after.

Any thoughts/ideas?

Thanks!

Yes and no!

I would be very wary of something thats sold as ready to back unless i knew the seller well! As most sold like this have been messed up and aren't the little angels they are meant to be. However, if you could at least get the horse backed very lightly, ie, just having a rider sat up on it and led about then i would think a little differently, and would prob buy.

I agree with towerhamlets i buy unbroken ponys as they are cheep and all i can afford but i would rather have them untouched then i no they havn't been messed up by someone else. If you could find someone to sit on them after all your work on the ground they should sell as thats what alot of people want. something thats been sat on a few times without killing anyone will be worth more money to!

imo, no.

i am very wary of half done horses as it makes me think someone has tried to get on and had a problem.

although i only buy youngsters now i would rather they had done nothing at all or had been finished and backed so i am sure i am not buying someone else's problem!

Personally I would rather have a blank canvas but I'm sure if you are very happy to demonstrate what you have done, what stage each horse is up to so they can see clearly where they need carry on from, then you should be ok if you have done a good job.

I think you really you need to make a name for yourself and have a good reputation for doing it this way before you can rely on making a business of it, good horsemanship and quality youngstock spreads like wildfire, so once you have got the ball rolling then yes it will work.

Thanks for all your comments.

If I did go ahead, it would be purely as a personal project, rather than looking to make a business out of it (unless I managed to do such a good job, everyone wanted one!!!). I know a couple of people who could sit on for me, since it sounds like this would help, and was something I'd been considering aswell.

I can appreciate people's thoughts regarding a blank canvas. Hopefully though, it would be clear that the pony would be well handled, well mannered, and had time taken on it, rather than going for a quick fix for a quick turnaround.

Thanks again!!
