Hi All, nearly three months on since my Total Hip Replacement. When did people start riding again. The surgeon said when you feel ready...after the three month mark.
Thanks guys xx

My mother had a hip replacement in January, but she isn't nearly ready to start riding again - she has a lot of mobility back but the thought of sitting on a horse still makes her wince!

Instead she is going to have some sessions on a mechanical horse; a college near us has a simulator. Hopefully this will help get the muscles into shape in a safe controlled way without having to worry about a live horse moving suddenly when she's trying to mount, or worse - spooking!

A friend of mine has waited six months after a double hip replacement before gettin.g back on, and only ten minutes at a time. Good luck.

Let your own body tell you when it's ready, I had a knee replacement 3 yrs ago and I decided it was better to start on a mechanical horse so that if I needed to stop or get off with help it was there! It also helped bio mechanically to get me straight and give me confidence for getting back on board a live one. I have 2 HR friends one of them was back on board as soon as she could and is now RCA eventing, dressage etc the other has spent much longer getting back on board but is now happily riding again. Good luck and build up gradually

Hi there
I'm an international Endurance rider and only 42 and I had my right hip replaced on the 21st October and had the left hip replaced on the 2nd of December which sadly went wrong and i had to have two wash outs and a partail revision done on the 19th of Decemebr and i spent 6 weeks in hospital in total. I was allowed to start riding 9 weeks and 5 days after my revision. This was only allowed as I had spent hours in the gym and the hydro pool (daily during my hospital stay). On Saturday I rode 160km (100 miles) on my horse Eskar and qualified him and I for the World Championships. I never once asked the consultant when i could ride he told me go home and ride after our 9 week 5 days consultation. he told me that I must ride with long stirrups which is what I do anyway and be careful mounting and dismounting and always do so from a high step (a great new use for the nhs issue perching stool!!!)
good luck
Kirsty

I was on five weeks and three days after mine I hunt jump do dressage its great enjoy it .
I did have quite a lot of soft tissue pain as things that where seized up as result of ten years damage with the bad hip got going sports massage and physio helped this just I case you get sore keep it in mind.

My mum who's 52 had both hips replaced on the 27th of October and would be capable of returning to riding if I had anything under 17 hh and not built like a tank lol, she tries mounting a couple of times a wk but still can't quite get her leg over lol. Have been offered a smaller horse for her to ride but not sure if she wants to risk it as she's v comfy with my mare and knows her inside out

Knowing the horse was really important to me as well.
