Oh! Not seen that written in an ad before. I am curious and would ring up to find out why: maybe they will tell you exactly why he will fail it and how the condition is managed? ???

If not and its to avoid those pesky "timewasters" who will vet the horse and discover something the owner would prefer they didn't and decide not to purchase, then I be grateful I had avoided that pesky timewaster vendor!

Personally if I was looking I would just go on to the next advert. I wouldn't buy a horse if I couldn't arrange my own vetting. Doesn't matter what the owners says is wrong, there might be other things going on that they don't know about. I also hate ads that go on the attack about "timewasters". One person's timewaster is often another person's careful buyer, and I always feel as if you'd be under pressure to make a quick decision if you went to see these "no timewaster" people. I just thought what an off-putting advert it was.

What a lovely looking horse, but not open to vet?? Would you buy that?

Light hacking home = long term injury, so worth meat money only.

Looks like a nice chap. What a shame they can't find a way to keep him at home.

Absolutely agree

An injury wouldn't necessarily put me off, if I had the money not to concern myself too much about the bills, but I would still want a vetting to get the lowdown on what the problem was and what the prognosis was.

I think they'll have trouble selling him with that ad, a shame. Hope he doesn't end up in a dodgy dealers yard

If the injury / problem is that bad that they can't risk a vetting, they should either keep him, find him trusted local loaners who they can check up on regularly or euthanise him.

This has actually really bothered me: the more I think about it, the more I think it's very irresponsible

If you take on a horse, you take on the responsibility to do your best to ensure its welfare. I don't think this advert is likely to do that.

From this advert it seems they are more interested in selling than in finding him a good new home.

Weird isn't. I've known horses with a chronic problem still vetted 3 or 5 stage (depending on the problem) just for a new vets opinion and to track down any other problems!

Precisely! He's obviously got a known condition which renders him suitable as a light hack only and whilst someone might be quite happy taking him on knowing about this - who's to say a vetting might not find something else of concern.

Very irresponsible of the seller IMO. Mind you, doubtful they will get much response.

Just a thought...maybe the seller expressed himself badly and what they mean is "won't pass vet" in which case the horse MAY have a future with someone who understands the limitations of whatever condition he has.

I am just saying this as a lot of people try out their adverts on here and often what they want to say is unclear.

In which case, he might be worth a ring to find out what is wrong, how it limits the horse, etc. and it may also be possible to arrange a vetting. Just a thought, in case someone is interested in such a horse because he looks like a lovely chap!

I never have a horse vetted anyway! Waste of time and money! Just get them insured! Didn't even get my big showjumper vetted and he cost nearly 6k!

I'm actually surprised you could even find an insurer for your £6k SJ'er without a 5 stage vetting.

He's beautiful but obviously has something wrong with him, maybe navicular, who knows .. anyone going to be a timewaster and ring up to find out for us???

I though vets vetted for purpose anyway - so if you said " I want horse as light hack" they wouldn't fail it on the same things they would if you said " I want to go to Badders"

Leave well alone I'd say.

Lol weirdly, last vetting I was at the vet said "well he won't go round badminton but he will round here" lol

As for vetting being a waste of time and money.... why would you sink that much money into something without your eyes wide open!? Just because something "fails" the vet doesn't mean you don't have to buy it, just means you know what costs may happen. Or any specialist care the horse might need.

Very well put.

i agree with Booboos- i think the vendor is trying to explain (badly!) that the horse won't pass the vet, not you can't have him vetted.

and i would say good on him in that case- rather than praying he will pass the vet and selling him on to someone with no idea he has any issues.

so many people won't even consider buying a horse if it 'fails' a 5 stage vetting, so i guess the vendor is just saving himself and potential buyers the hassle of having the conversation over the phone.

I've just posted about this (will go back & edit post)

If this isn't just a badly worded add then am I right in thinking that if you didn't have this animal vetted before purchase & problems showed up once you got it home, that those problems then would not be covered on the insurance policy?

Going by those ads I personally wouldn't touch it. You can get perfectly healthy horses for £1,500 & ones that are capable of more than just light hacking.

It's a shame because I too thought he was lovely looking.

Maybe I'm being too harsh & he has arthiritis or navicular but even so, I still wouldn't buy him.
