Real or Copy?

Im finally off to Australia! and have found 2 lovely people to look after my ned.

They are coming round later to sign the loan agreement, but if you were in my situation would you give them a copy of the passport or the real thing?

If i was to give them a copy, I would give the real one my mum and dad and then they give them the real one when he has his vaccination, though hes not due until April.

He is staying on the same yard, with all my friends and family close by so I know he will be well looked after and he wont be going anywhere but you do hear these stories where people have sold their loan horse!

The younger one who is sharing him, wants to take him to the beach etc

You should give them the real one. You could always write to the passport issuer and ask them to keep info on file that the horse is on loan so that the details canot be amended while you are away.

Think of the worse case scenario too, if the horse became injured suddenly and needed moving, or veterinary treatment, or even being PTS on welfare grounds, your loaners could be in a very difficult situation - unless your parents can be found at very short notice to deal with any crisis.

I agree with the watcher.... they may need it. Maybe it could be kept at the yard where they are to be keeping him?

Yep, another one agreeing with the watcher, keep a photocopy youself so if it is lost or anything it can be easily replaced.

They need to have the real one. My loaners have my horse's passport.

You give them the real one.

Just make sure its in the agreement that although they hold the passport that at no time is the horse their property.

Or, if its a livery yard you could (not my preference but i have a couple of friends who have done this) as the YO/YM to hold the passport for the horse.
Some yards hold the passports anyway

Real one it is.

its written in the contract that "at no time are they the registered owner of the horse, and under no circumstances are they permited to loan, lease or sell the horse to any third parties"
