Debating with others over this picture (have no idea where it came from!) I say it is fake, others disagree....

Ditto it looks like a Breyer model.

I recall that I've read something about that there is people who spends time on changing it to real hair in the mane and tail, taking more or less flashy photos of their model horses etc, so that they then can enter the photos into special competitions for model horses.

:)

It's a very nicely done custom Breyer :) I used to customise and show model horses - I wish people had mistaken mine for real ones!

Fake...even the waves behind the model don't look like they were taken at the same time.
To get the fake hair to blow in the wind all you need is a hair dryer or fan.

If its real then I would be worried that my horse looked like it was made from plastic!!

I knew that I had read about such competitions and that some added real hair to their models, did a quick search and found for example these two pages from About.com :
How to enter Photo show competitions for Model horses.

Adding hair manes and tails to Breyer horse models for beginning collectors.

Without trying to find suitable pages to link to, I will just say that some really takes it a step further when it comes to customising their model horses, everything from changing the colour of their horse to heating up the plastic in the neck, head, a leg or two etc., so that they can change their posture...

By the way, my first search also lead to this page Gifts for the horse lover.com - Playing “Horse Show”, a list of some possible classes that you can entry your model in :

"And Performance classes can include any number of disciplines including (but certainly not limited to):-
•dressage
•show jumping
•showmanship
•cutting
•reigning
•trail
•western pleasure
•liberty
•games
•harness
•racing
•arabian costume
•native american costume
•other costume"

That page lead me to this page Ohjoyfarms.com - Photo showing hints, with some good tips like :

"DO NOT cut off ears, hooves, tails, etc. Center your model in the picture."
"Also...have your doll "LOOKING" where he/she is going...not staring off into space!"
"Having your model look like it is about to be eaten by "plantzilla" does not help your placing in the class!"

:)

P.S. I would probably put my money on that somebody have put quite some time on transforming a TS Black Tie Affair Breyer model, based on a 7/8 Arabian pinto colt (from the Traditional series, B1473), into the model in the photo Fools Motto posted. Breyerhorses.co.uk - TS Black Tie Affair.

Very impressive if it is real since it can clearly fly as there are no hoof prints behind it.

Also, what's with the nicely placed stones on the beach?

If it were photographed against the water it would look out of proportion and risks being washed away :) It's probably on a table and the stones break up the divide between fore and background.

It's not easy to photograph a 12" model and make it look like a live picture, I don't think they've done a bad job at all :)
