Just watching Real Rescues which included a pony stuck over the breast bar in a trailer. The fire crew, trailer owner and vet were all standing round talking about haing to sedate the horse and cut the bar, while in clear view were the allen bolts that enable you to release the bar from outside! Perhaps the trailer manufacturers (Ifor Williams) need to point this out to fire crews round the country!

Am sat at home with a cup of coffee shouting at the tv for them to unscrew the allen bolts, but then again i suppose it wouldn't make a 'dramatic' tv programme if they used a bit of common sense.

I always make sure I have the correct size Allen key in the towing vehicle, but I have wondered how easy they are to use if the full 550kg of my mare was hanging on them?

Has anyone used these Allen bolts in a situation like this?

ETA I have also wondered if I ought to undo them and grease them, to make them easier to use if I needed to? Or would that make them at risk of working themselves loose on a long journey??

Yes, me as well. I also thought that the breast bar looked to be fitted rather low.

The reason I was interested was because I have had this happen myself and we were able to free the mare with an allen key. We have since changed the bolts for the new version which have a loop on the end into which you put a bar (or the wheel nut spanner)to undo the bolts.

You can get them from any Ifor Williams dealer. Mine came from GT Towing http://www.gttowing.co.uk/Trailer-Parts/catalogue/28/# .
We did have to drill one of the original bolts out in the end (it's an old trailer!) fortunately not the one that needed to be undone to free the mare!
Incidentally she was none the worse for her experience even though she was suspended by her belly over the bar for nearly 30 minutes in the end by the time we located the right size allen key and then got the bolts undone. And she walked calmly out when she got home, and also straight back in the next time we travelled her.
