I've never thought that my mare needed knee boots as she is very sure footed, that is until tonight.

We went out for a lovely hack and we were going down quite a steep hill, one that we go down at least 3 times a week and all of a sudden she fell

for no reason at all, she didn't slip, slide, trip, nothing, just went straight down onto her knees. Her head disappeared goodness knows where and I came off too landing straight on my bum

I really thought that she was going to come down onto me but she didn't and somehow she scrambled up and looked and me very confused. She just stood there bless her.

She has grazed her knee, its not too bad at all luckily but its taken the hair off and scraped off the skin. I walked her around and she was fine, not lame or stiff so I got back on. The poor guy I was hacking out with was frightened to death I think

I'm not hurt it just really shook me up, luckily there were not any cars about. I was worried that she'd hit her head as it disappeared but I can't see a mark on her face.

She walked back fine and when I took her brushing boots off when we got back she has got a cut on the front of her fetlock as well, again its not too bad. I've bathed it and put anti septic cream on and I'll see how she is tomorrow.

We were very lucky and I'll be down the tack shop tomorrow buying a set of knee boots, she's going to look like she's got full armour on when we go out

Tonight could of been a lot worse, she could of been hurt a lot more than she was.

I wish I knew why she went down but I'll never know, but God forbid if it ever happens again she'll have her knees covered.

Thanks, I'm fine, I was just really shaken at the time. It happened so quickly and I'm really peeved that I came off! I havn't come off for ages, but I don't think that I could of done a lot to stay on really, the front end totally disappeared, if her neck had stayed there I would of been ok I think. I'm just thinking of the positve side, she is fine, just superficial grazes, I'm fine and we have learnt a lesson, knee boots are more than just another accessory

Fly did this a while ago right outside our gate after a hack! Couldn't believe it, his knee skin was very obviously on the tarmac. Luckily it was a graze and nothing worse.

Hope she feels better soon!

I can understand why after this you want to go and buy some knee boots for her - but where do you stop!?? We don't walk round in knee and elbow pads in case we fall over after all!

I agree but if we fall over we havn't got the weight behind us that our horses have.

She already wears brushing boots all round (because she brushes) and Old Mac's on her back feet as she is only shod on the front. But I don't think that I can take the risk of it happening again and us not being so lucky next time. I may be wrapping her up in cotton wool, nothing new there

but I don't want to take the chance.

I do see your point though

When you sort out knee boots don't waste your money on neoprene ones, they;re a waste of time.....always go for leather as they give much more protection.

I suggests she speaks to her vet & finds out just how serious injuries to the knees are....if any infection gets into the joint's fluid the prognosis is not very good, the infection is difficult to treat & can mean the animal being PTS.

I was wondering how you were, havn't see you around for ages! I've been meaning to ring/text you for the last couple of weeks to see how you are but you know what its like with the time bla bla bla

Cropi is fine this morning, not too impressed at having more anti septic cream put on but she is not lame and does not seem stiff. Me on the other hand!!! I feel quite stiff and my butt is quite sore, I've got a nasty bruise on my wrist

from my watch I think. Never mind it could of been worse.

Thanks for the links Toby, they are really good
