what would people say would be a realistic budget to have when looking to buy an unbacked connie or connie x? Would be looking at something between 1-3 year old and would have to make at least 14.2hh?

Thanks :)

I'm based in Ireland so this might not be very helpful but you could easily get a yearling Connie/ X for €200 (think thats around £150) and it doesn't cost that much to transport them over, I know there are a few companies that transport horses to the UK on a weekly bases.
It's also a lot more common these days to see them at 15-15.2hh, even the purebreds

Gosh that's cheap! At the Brightwells sales in Malvern the connies were about the only thing making any money. Personally I'd go for a connie/tb for what you are looking to do, the lighter frame would be better for BE.

I'm looking for slightly older but Connie and with view to BE and maybe BSJA...I found a couple of nice 4 year olds that were 4k..some "ok" ones that are around the 2.5k mark but anything that's showing any talent is easily 3.5k +

So I imagine prices you're looking at will be a bit lower, but I wouldn't expect to pay under 1.5k for something nice and showing talent, with what i've seen of the Connies on the market the last few months.

I am considering spending a few days in Ireland to view some with the potential of transporting one over as there does seem to be a lot more options at much more reasonable prices

Yeah that was the cross i had in mind i went to the jedforest sale a couple of weeks ago and there connie x tb seemed a nice sort but all the ones there were bigger than i am after unfortunatly

there are plenty of overheight connies these days if you just want to have something that is fun & will turn it's hoof to anything. My 4 were all bought in Ireland as 4 yr olds and I paid between £800 - £1200 for them and they have all gone on to be absolute crackers & hunt, event, do PC, WHP and anything else we can think of. The next sales at Clifden are at the end of October and you can definitely pick up a bargain there if you know what you are looking for!

just adding to what lch611 has said, if you go onto donedeal.ie a lot of people advertise their connies here a few weeks before Clifden, so you could get an idea of what you'll find when you get there, price ranges etc and they usually include lot numbers as well in case you find one you really like!
