We are thinking about getting a new horse. Would like something that will reliably go double clear at PN and get placed at elementary dressage. Must be easy and straight forward to ride, hack out alone and hunt.
Do people think this is realistic for max £7000?

Imho you cant that nowadays for 7k unless you go for something either with a few points but not up to doing novice seriously so would have to be in OPN, something with 'issues' or something older

Even the best can't just take any rider round a pre novice double clear a lot of it is dependent on the rider.
There will be alot of horses around that price but finding one that suits you can be difficult .
I think a horse that can help a rider out is worth a fortune but a rider that can help a horse out can make it look worth a fortune.Good luck with your quest

If you want something doing that level now you will struggle with that budget. You should be able to by something to bring on to that level though.

There are VERY few horses in the world that will run DC reliably - it is down to the rider!

But I would say yes, you can find something - look for temprement over results, there are a LOT of decent horses out there that are used for hacking and or hunting only, but have the scope to do so much more.

My instructors just sold something very similar for 8, but it was working to its full potential. If your lucky you might get something close to what you want!

Thanks for replies so far, understand that may sometimes have stops etc and poles down and i need to be able to ride it as well, which dont mind but just want something that generally wants to go and enjoys it! Dont mind having to do OPN but do most events running PN have an open section - havent had to look at this before?

i think it is deffinately possible, as long as you get on with the horse and ride it well enough. we found my mare for under £7k, and although she doesnt have a BE record she has the temprement and ability to do well, and hasnt had a single stop at a fence since we have had her (xcountry and showjumping) and pulls off a nice dressage test too. you just have to look around abit

Carthorse - you are so right!

That's why I'd always buy a horse from someone of a similar ability to me as I'm sure if I bought said horse from a professional it wouldn't go that well for me.

You're not looking for a world beater in your spec, so yes, you should get something capable of that for the money. It will need riding though.......there are very few push button rides available at that price

I have a horse which is push button at PN but he refuses to do the dressage within his ability! So I gave up competing him. So I think they are out there and I think you could find a schoolmaster at that price.

I think that if your ambition is to get round a PN safely, but not go on to do Novice or higher, then you should get something for your money.

PN is not very big and you don't need a classic eventer stamp, (eg. 16.2, 7/8 TB by Someone Well Known) a nice half-bred, for example, would do the job, and all the other things you want to do too.

The problem is, if it's been round a few PNs successfully already, then it will probably be too expensive. You could try looking for one that has hunted or done a bit of show jumping and hunter trials.
