realistically, what payload should i be looking at?

Im looking to buy a horsebox but I'm so confused as to what payload I should be looking for.

I have two 16.2 dutch warmbloods - one weighs about 620kgs and the other is a bit less. I have assumed 1250kgs for the two of them to be on the safe side.

How much extra should I be looking for? I was thinking another 400-ish to account for passengers, tack, feed etc - does this sound about right?

for example: the lorry im looking at has an unladen weight of 3440 and a gross weight of 5000.
3440 + 1250 (horses) gives me 4690, which leaves 310 for passengers and equipment. Does this sound about right?

Not sure of your figures.

My 7.5 tonne lorry had a payload of 1.8 tonne, which seems about right having looked at a fair few lorries allowances.

It was stalled for four horses, but they would have had to be skinny rescue cases to get four on, plus us and our gear!

Two DWBs at 620 each, equals 1240, which in my lorry, for example, would leave me with 560. I wouldn't risk carrying another horse if I was also taking more than me, plus gear, hay, water, fuel.

yes you should be ok on that.... providing it does not overload one of the axles which can happen when you run close to the limit, but unless it is badly built and the ballance is wrong IE there is a big overhang at the back you should be fine...
