Went down to the yard today and spent the late afternoon washing and trimming my beautiful boy and had a lovely time just chilling having a nice time with him.
Yard owner is away with her children competing and another livery looks after neds and is really good and helpful however I offered to help by bringing in one of the neds who lives next door to my horse.
Well off I trundle to get in ned who I notice still has his heavyweight NZ on although it's been very very warm here and I immediatley notice he is sweating behind his ears and clearly hot. I got him into the stable block and took off his rug which was soaking wet, he was so hot he had sweat running down his bum, shoulder and legs and was extremely tucked up and wound up too and pawed the ground and rubbed himself madly on the walls of his stable. I cooled him down and gave him his tea but added shed loads of water as he was clearly dehydrated and he cooled down and calmed down but he had been so hot his rug had rubbed his hips red raw.
I am so bloody annoyed that nobody has cared for this horse of the people that are resposible for it and it's been down to me to do something about him being so unhappy.

Poor horse

Axel has a HW turnout rug on at night and the other morning at 9.30 when I went down to take it off he was a bit sweaty. So that poor horse must have been sweltering all day as its been quite warm today.
Where was the owner?

What are people thinking when they put horses out in such big rugs - did i miss the weather forcast for snow.......
It's a shame that the horses are the ones who end up suffering - maybe we should out the owners out in a really thick sleeping bag and put them out in the field for the day.....

Crikey, and I felt bad leaving Maiden a little bit hot at 6.50pm in her two lightweight rugs (it's meant to be 5 degrees C here tonight, so it's difficult to put a warm enough rug on for the night when it's still 20 degrees when I leave the yard!)
Even the fully clipped lot are now out with no fill rugs or just fly rugs! Poor horse!

How upsetting.I had a similar thing Thursday.Went down to ride my horse in my lunchbreak and was shocked to discover that in the heat of the day my poor welsh D had her medium weight full neck rug on!! The yard owner had taken all the other horses rugs off that morning but left my horse with hers on,now she knows i don't get up there till midday most days,so i was actually quite angry as there is no shelter in my mares field from the rays and she had sweat dripping off her,she was in a real state. So i didn't ride that day as it took me a while giving her a wash down and making her comfy and refreshed again, and she was in no state to do work! My mare hates the heat at the best of times so i was very upset. Some people are very ignorant.

Well just to be devils advocate - it won't actually hurt the horse

They put massive rugs on the eventers getting ready for the Olympics in Atlanta as they had to cope with the heat

That said I was baking my horse today with just a rain sheet, but I am doing that on purpose as he will have to wear his boett all summer, so want him to self regulate at higher temps.

I appreciate what you're saying CotswoldsSJ but I'd argue the point on this occasion as his rug had actually made the top of his hips extremely sore, I had to bathe and put cream on them, he was clearly dehydrated which I'm sure the eventers were at least checked and given electrolytes when needed. I was quite shocked when I took his rug off as he was tucked up and clearly uncomfortable. He's not been very well lately so a little TLC would be nice for him but I'm the only one that seems to ever bother with him, he's on full livery as his owner goes on a lot of cruises so really it's down to those caring for him however both YO and I have asked owner to get a lightweight rug and she hasn't. I do wonder what the point of owning a horse is when people can't be bothered with them!
