Anyone any advice on treatment for a really bad cough.
My horse has had a cough now for about a week , it is coming from really deep down.
When he is eating and starts coughing bits of food end up being brought up.
He does only cough really badly though when he is trotting or cantering .
I havent worked him all week as i didnt want to put any more pressure on his lungs and thought him going oueveryday in the fresh air might help , but he has still got it .
I was going to ring the vet and see if he thought i could do with some anti biotics tomorrow , but thought u might as well see if any of u guys had any thoughts .
I dont think it's a allergy to anything because nothing has changed and it has been going around the yards near me recently horses coughing.

Try honey in his feed with some sort of human cough med i always use cavornia (sp) or benelyn for a couple of days, if not after that i usually have to get the vet for a very expensive session of ventipulmin

try equimins power booster it is excellent and whilst he his in the stable or field get him a respirator lick from horyzlicks very good so he has deconsetiant going through him all the time give that 4 days to work if no better call vet!

If he is coughing this severely then call your vet, and don't work him as this will potentially cause long term damage to his lungs. Would also be worth taking his temperature.

In an ideal world scoping him and doing a tracheal wash would be the way to go. This would enable your vet to determine whether this is an allergic or an infectious problem and treat accordingly. Personally I wouldn't mess about with human drugs and supplements.

He really needs to have the vet check him over.

I've used Benelyn for decades on horses it is a good cough mixture for them. Though can't remember how much we gave them.
