Hi i have a clydesdale that i bought at start of this year that was in a terrible condition he has slowly been putting weight on but the problem is his feet when i got him they where really overgrown and had loads of cracks in them, farrier been several times now and has advised me to keep him out of wet conditions (so in he is) but just wondering if anyone can recommend a good dressing to put on them or suppliment to give him to strengthen them as they really soft and the cracks keep growing with the hoof and dont seem to be getting any better?

People recommend gelatine - just ordinary powdered gelatine from the supermarket - for bad feet. One sachet a week.

When you consider what it is made from, it's an obvious supplement for feet!!

Thanks. they are really badly misshapen so think this doesnt help with cracking. farrier said yesterday they are like butter and he needs to stay out of the wet to give them a chance he didnt recomend anything though(dressings or suppliments)

Is he shod at the moment? How does your farrier feel about a measured amount of roadwork to encourage the feet to grow in tougher? The wet summer certainly isn't helping anyone; my sympathy!

Keratex hoof hardener. it is a clear liquid and works wonders believe me. I couldnt keep shoes on an irish sports horse of mine, the farrier said it was like nailing into steak !! this stuff really worked. It helps retain shoes as well.

there's a German hoof dressing called Hainzl Hufsalbe which my dr trainer recommended, and i found it on the internet. it contains camphor iirc, you put it around coronet band and it stimulates blood flow and therefore growth, smells interesting too! he reckons its the best thing on the market. i bought quite a few pots and have 1 unopened if you wanted to try, pm me if you do.

I have got on really well with naf profeet supplement, have tried formula 4 feet too which I know woeks for some but was disappointed so have returned to naf and they are already looking better.

The liquid is more palatable than the powder.

On feet I use naf hoof rub and cornecrescin a couple times a week.

No shoes and dont really want to do roadwork till they get a little better as they just break. I have contacted farrier to see what he recomends and he just said paint with cod liver oil he said it better than any special horsey products so will give that a go i think

any oil like that will soften the hoof though surely? I'd be tempted to shoe him as alot of horses can't go unshod (Ty is a prime example)

put tar on his feet to keep the water out.

nothing to nail a shoe to as they are sort of duck shape (a bit like a clover) and wont hold a nail anyway as too brittle . will try and get photo and put it on

try feeding a Biotin compound, which actually is fairly cheap, and try massaging the coronary band as often as you can, free and as effective as anythng you can apply. If you want to apply something, try Hoof Heal. It will be some time before the hoof at ground level will be good.
