Really bad Thrush

Went down the yard today and realised Pete has really bad thrush.

He has been in his box since forever due to snow/ice and hes so mucky in his box. I always get rid of all the wet and he always has a thick enough floor.

I scrubbed them out with a hibi-scrub solution and put a clean bale in his bed so he was standing on spotless shaving (not for long!).

I will scrub out everyday but I wondered if there was anything else I could do? I am going to go and buy some cut-heal which is supposed to help thrush. Farrier coming next week Thursday so will ask him but wondered if there was anything I could do in the meantime?

It is horrid keeping them in isn't it? Worst cases I've seen (smelt!) are of those kept in.
Picking out feet regularly (even if not riding) and possibly chucking some straw on top of his shavings to keep him just a little further off damp patches might help. (Personally I'm not really keen on straw as it is a pain to muck out if used for the whole bed and dusty but it is good for being a barrier.)

Another thing to consider: can you re-position his feed and water so that where he spends a lot of time eating his feet will be in a dryish bit that isn't wherever the stable drains to?

There will be others on here who've tried more lotions and potions to get rid of it than me but the more general stuff should help keep it at bay after you've applied those.
 
Thanks Tickles for your reply. The problem is his stable is small - too small for a horse of his size ideally so he just makes 3/4 of the middle wet so I have little other option but to put his feed at the front.

I will be keeping a close eye on his feet, though.

I find that hydrogen peroxide is really good for clearing up thrush. I don't like to use it all the time though so I use a tea-tree oil based product which is a really good preventative.
 
Hi there - hygiene and a clean and dry bed are most important but you could try honey as it is a natural remedy for thrush. Other than that i have used Purple spray which seems to do the trick aswell.
 
Thanks for your replies. I am guessing the antibacterial stuff is supposed to last for a while? (if he ever gets it again?) because its quite expensive. Obviously worth it.

I used honey before when my horse had thrush, he would bang his hoof on anything he could find to get the honey out and then eat it...
I used iodine, seemed to work very well.
 
My farrier suggested to use peroxide only once or twice to kill the majority of thrush, then to iodine or purple spray it. Worked well!
 
I use milton fluid (or the Tesco equivalent) diluted 1:5 in water in a spray bottle - get the foot clean and then hold each one up and spray for 2-3 minutes - basically keep refreshing it.

Clears it up nicely.
 
Star had thrush which I battled and then called the vet.
Terramycin spray (blue spray) is brilliant at killing the infection, but sadly is prescription only.
I thought I had sorted Star's thrush until her feet were well and truly trimmed and revealed another patch of it, so I'm using the blue spray for 5 days, and then spraying with Iodine to stop it returning.

Star was on shavings before and her feet have improved dramatically since she went onto straw. All the wet drops through so she's stood on dry.
 
honey.....its natural, its relatively cheap, and it really works. just clean the feet out and smear the honey in the feet. its a bit messy...but definately works, and very quickly..x
 
What about good old fashioned stockholm tar?

I used to use Effol on my horse when he got it - not sure f they still sell it but it was in a green pot and very good
 
i used domestos every other day for the 1st week then twice a week for the second week and it is gone.keep the feet picked out because the bacteria doesn`t like fresh air.
you need the farrier to pare back the dead frog and to get rid of the nooks and crannies.

Yes it lasts a fairly long time. I think the most often its used is three times a week as very concentrated. It then scales back to once a fortnight.

Good stuff.
