TB will be possibly wintering out this year with a decent field shelter with straw on a concrete base to wonder in and out of when she pleases. She stiffens up when she is inside especially if she is not worked every day, shes only 6. So i have decided to take her off livery and move her onto my 3.5 acres with the others. Plus it seems daft to be paying out for livery when it costs nothing to have her with the other 2.
So am after a really decent turn out rug for the winter, i don't mind how much it costs so long as its decent quality is going to last and will keep the wimp warm over winter (and others to come!!) :) she is pretty good with her rugs, even the cheap ones last well with her.
Any recommendations?

Weatherbeeta taka..i think its that, bright blue around 400g of filling, mine wore it all winter with either just that or a fleece under it. Was about -15 at points and she kept her weight on well & was always warm. She is a TB aswell

Weatherbeeta have done my horses really well. I have a MW and it kept my horse warm and dry through all the snow (though I did use an under rug when it got very cold) despite horse living out 24/7 (with access to shelter). I have brought very expensive rugs in the past and they have not lasted any better that the WB. In fact the most expensive rug I ever had rubbed half my boy's mane off! Expensive rugs tear just as easily as the cheap ones in my horses opinion, they certainly don't take any longer to trash them :p

For tb's I just love Mark Todd rugs. They cover them so well - the neck is far, far longer than the Weatherbeetas and it really goes round their tummy. Kept my boy snuggly all through the snow - he didn't even need an underrug it kept him so warm! Weatherbeetas are really good and my Welshie has several, but Mark Todd just covers more of them so I prefer them for wussy tb's. I also like Rambo's but MT definitely wins it for me :)

As the first person said the Taka is fab, had mine in it fully clipped with a fleece underneath in the snow. It's 360g & 1200 denier (my cob only managed a small hole - he usually shreds!) so very strong, plus doesnt rub at all.

I have a lovely WB Taka and it doesn't fit my TB! :( It's now the emergency spare as it gapes around the neck and she now has a Rhino Wug. You may need to buy a size up with Horseware rugs but they really are fab. My anglo has the Rambo duo (fantastic) and my arab also has a Rhino Wug but I think that she'll have out grown it by next winter. *sobs*

Just to add as HHO won't let me edit - make sure you get a neck, whether removable or fixed. Not just because it helps keep the mud off them but because it makes a huge difference to their overall temperature.

I`ve got an arab x tb who is really difficult with fitting rugs, winter turnouts are premier equine which is a fab fit, and also anything by Horseware :)

Any of the more expensive Weatherbeeta's. I have various (Tristar, Arion, Orican etc.) and all have been excellent except for the cheapest Landa version they do which I find leaks. They fit everything, never leak or rub and are warm.

I've given up on full necked rugs. You can probably see that the Duo doesn't have the neck on it. I found that so much of her fur and mane was being rubbed out by the neck, that she was better off without it.

The Wug style doesn't rub the mane out, which is why I like those. A bit more protection for the neddy and they get to keep their mane. :)

Fair enough. To be fair, I have never had this problem with Weatherbeetas or Mark Todds so it depends how easily your horse's mane disappears.

I reapair lots and lots of rugs as part of a rugwash service. In my experience of howmany I have to repair the Fal ones come out best with not much breaking on them. The Rambos are tough and strong but the front clips are a regular repair job. The Taka are a good but I have had quite a few rips and my TAKA doesnt fit my TB type.

Bought a Rambo wug for our retired TB broodmare who hates being in, purchased direct from Horseware in 2008 and she has worn it for the last 3 winters from sept until april out 24/7 in a sheltered field and she hasnt need anything extra, even during the big freeze she was as warm as toast under it. (I know as I warmed my frozen hands under it a few times!:D). It hasnt moved on her even once and shes a slightly funny shape, high wither and a bit dippy now at 28. I loved it so much I bought 2 more of them the following year for the 22 year old and the 21 year old and same story. In spite of continuous use no straps have broken and no mane has been rubbed, there have been no leaks and they do not move. They might be a bit more expensive to buy but for peace of mind and performance I'll never buy any other type of turnout. All 3 are still perfect and will be in use again next winter.

I LOVE all the Premier Equine rugs, and the heavyweights are really warm, and have found all the turnouts extremely waterproof!

Fit my Arab really well, and are lovely and deep and wrap nicely around belly.

Premier Equine. Fit my TB really well and keep him lovely and warm throughout the whole of last winter. Even in the -20c temps we had.

I've had my PE rugs for nearly 4 years now (had them with my old horse, who was a youngster and a complete rug wrecker) and these rugs still have no tears/rips to be seen. :)

Rambo Duos are excellent rugs and are very adaptable to the temperatures. With the liners you can make them as warm or cold as you need and they last really well. The newer ones are really good with the extra fasteners on the front of the chest and the safety features on the belly straps. Ive had my original blue one 5yrs now and it washes and re-proofs like new every time, the newer brown and cream one is even better. In my opinion its really good value for money and more versatile than just one heavyweight rug.

The Premier Equine ones are ok but the horse I look after has one and its very heavy when wet.

Hi , if you have a TB Id go with Horseware as they fit TB's brill. Yes they are more expensive but will last years , and I do mean years ! I have one thats the original Green , cotton lined , and its 15 years old , still going strong , waterproof and fits my TB's . If they are too expensive the Weatherbeeta range would be a good alternative , the Orican is a good warm rug and not too expensive .

I know you've been given several answers here but I have to say in my experience, Rambo Supreme is pretty unbeatable! It's the heaviest weight rug there is I think at 420g fill but very lightweigh to handle. Neck is removable. Mine was bought at the start of the 2003/04 winter and still going strong. Never needs anything under it and even when it was minus 12 this winter, and Ludo is fully clipped he was toasty, toasty warm! About £250 now-a-days I think. BUT I've never used mine 24/7 - Ludo comes in at night but I'd still bet it will do a perfect job for you.

Rambo rugs are the toughest rugs there and the necks are removeable to give you flexibility, but the mark todd rugs with the necks attached are even warmer for TB's because the necks are even longer with thicker padding.
