My 2 year old is in DIY Livery at the moment and its costing me £137.00 a month excluding bedding feed etc. Obviously i can't ride him for at least another year so was thinking of turning him away to just grass livery and getting something in i can ride and be getting on with.

My youngster had a bit of a tough time when he was younger and i'm so attached to him we have a real bond and if he doesn't make the size i need i will be devastated if i have to sell him.

Although he is young he is so well mannered as i have always treated him as an adult horse. he walks out on his own, never kicks, bites, bucks, rears or anything.

Someone has planted the seed in my mind today to turn him away for a year or so and get something else in.

This is all fine but what happens if i get attached to them both...and then i'll have two..

Wish i wasn't so soft but i do worry about my youngster being out in a cold field all winter again after all he has been through.. I guess a nice warm rug will help and i need to be tough.

What would you do?

I would go down the grass livery route. I think that it doesn't hurt youngsters to be out in the field and unless necessary I wouldn't rug him. He should grow a good coat and be perfectly fine. You have obviously handled him well and this will stand him in good stead when he is backed. Youngsters don't forget what they have learned.

Why don't you loan a horse or do a share until you know if your youngster will be big enough for you. If it is any consolation my six year old has gone up another two inches this year and doesn't look as though he has finished growing - at least I hope not as he is very bum high at the moment1

If I was in your position I'd just carry on how you are, I'm like you and would get attached and end up with two.

He's got loads of time to grow so I wouldn't even be worrying about that now.

Check local ads for someone that wants a horse ridden and then you have best of both worlds. There are always lots of ads where I live for people wanting their horses ridden.

Personally I would keep the 2 year old as he is and just offer to help other people with riding - there always seem to be people wanting horses exercised!

Also do you have the sort of horse who would like being out 24/7 - mine likes coming into his stable at night - if I don't bring him in early enough for his liking he puts himself to bed in the field shelter.

I'm in pretty much same situation i have a 2yr old obviously he isnt ridden, he just stands there looking pretty :D but to be honest it doesn't bother me not being able to ride i'm just going for a monthly lesson at a really good riding school. My boy is out 24/7 at the moment but would think in october he will be in of a night time :)
