Hi guys,

Im in a bit of a dilema and really dont no what to do, so what do you recon? (long sorry)

The yard im at at the minute is lovley its owned by an older couple who have some reitired mares and a couple of there friends horses. there is another pony there and the girl that owns him is never around and hardly ever comes up to see him or feed/brush/cuddle etc. it is getting to the point where the pony is becoming a right pain he bullys the old girls off the water and is generally mean to eveyone including humans (and the other are starting to copy), and on monday he bit my mare and ripped a hug hole in her £80 rug that I bought new last winter!

!

At the minute I really dont pay much £65 per month which includes hay, bedding, stable, turnout, and they somtimes bring her in for me if I cant make it out. they are lovly people and really do help me out when I need it! They dont have a sand school but I have the use of the top field (but in the winter its far to muddy) the hacking is good aswel, I do have to drive 15mins there and back. As I am the only one that rides it does get a bit boring always being up there on my own.

My best friend has horses and her mum has said that if I want to I could move to there yard, her mum has a youngster and rides all the time so I would have someone to ride with. im not exactly sure what the price will be but she has said that she doesnt mind me paying £65 like I do now. So that would mean me buying hay and bedding and im not sure if she would charge extra to bring in/turn out, they are about 5mins from my work and house, the hacking isnt as good but there are some woods about 20mins away which are massive! plus they have a sand school.

I really dont no what to do for the best, as the pain in the ass pony may be going up for sale? I would really apriciate your opinions and thoughts as to what I should do?

thanks for reading, and well done if you got this far!

It would be nice to have someone to ride with wouldn't it?? But if you are only moving because of the pony, then that seems a lot of upheavel over a situation that is easily remedied.

The money charged where you are is incredibly reasonable - and 15 mins is no distance at all.

However, £65 for livery, plus bedding and hay on top is still very cheap - and you get an arena to ride in.

Find out exactly what costs would be involved with the friend, speak with the couple you are with now about your concerns over the pony, and take it from there.

I would say that I think it's unrealistic to move yards every time there is a problem with another horse. Those of us that don't have the luxery of having our own land have to put up with some things - but communication in any situation is always the key. And if there is something worrying you then speak up.

However, I do understand your particular dilema - and I think I'd probably move to the friends if what she could offer me was suitable.

thanks guys,

If money wasnt an option then I would deffinatly move to my mates but unfortunaly it is and that in the end would be the decider to weather I move or not. thanks AmyMay your post are always really helpful and I am going to speak to the couple tonight they are so lovley so I would have thought they would try and do somthing about the problem pony, and im going to see my mate at the weekend and then weigh up the pros and cons for both, x

hes been getting worse over the past few months, hes only 5 and he was such a sweety he loves attention, but she has just stopped coming up I havnt seen her or heard from her for 2 weeks and I dont think she has even been up to see him! yes hes out 24/7 but doesnt get any haylage just the grass in the field, hes a dartmoor so doesnt need a rug etc but it wouldnt hurt her to bring him in every now and the and brush him! (sorry ranting now)

it just makes me so angry as he is just being waisted he has fantastic movement and would be wikid to show, I would take him on but I really donthave the time!

I find things like this really concerning - and wish that YO's would take more responsibility.

I can't believe that he is not getting any supplimentary hay - and this affects others in the field I'm sure that are out 24/7. His aggression is probably due to hunger and the people that own your yard should take some action.

So this poor little guy has to watch others get brought in and fed - while he goes hungry??

Shame on his owner, and shame on your YO's.

We have got a little welshie at the mo for a friend. He was being a pain at her yard, and had chased(!)a horse in for breaking through a fence!!!!
So he was promptly moved down so our boys could beat him up!!! They have done this and hes becoming a lovely pony!!!! He did spend the first couple of days firmly the other side of the river in the field and was chased back if he came up!!! He now knows his limits!!! Gets jealous when the others get attention and really now enjoys being worked, as only 4 and only just broken!!
But his owner might not approve of this!

Personally I would move just for the school, but then I'm not into hacking out... If the owner of the pony definately hasn't seen the pony for more than 3 days and no arrangements have been made for someone else to feed/check etc then you can report it as abandoned to the ILPH or RSPCA and they will come and check/contact owner etc.

Taking the pony out of the equation for a moment, the yard nearer to you still sounds like a better prospect.
As for the pony - maybe the YO's don't understand that they have some responsibility in this and that they should instruct the owner to at least visit and feed (or pay them to), or give the owner notice if they fail to do that.

I do feel really sorry for the little gut and somtimes i bring him in and give him some of my nuts but at the end of the day its not my responsability and I do think this is getting to the point of animal crulty! You have all made me realise that I have to speak up and go to the YO with my worries and hopfully then will take some action! there just so layed back that they just let you get on with your own thing but this is getting silly!

Abbey, they must take some action. They are actually being as negligent as the owner.

But I would also say that you may not have helped the situation here - the pony now has an expectation of comming in to get fed.
