My back is so bad I cant ride
frown.gif
(slipped disc, sciatica) and physio not improving it much. My neice who helps and rides for me has started college and really busy so I know her time will be much less

. My horse

(in pic) is really green and needs riding. I feel like my back wont ever get better, and am sat thinking should I sell her. She is such an angel and so very good, she deserves better than me limping around her

. Should I just bite the bullet and sell her, or hang on in the hope that a miracle happens

go back see your doc - have you had mri? they need to do something if physio just not working - it may be they can operate to remove disc - i have had that done - best thing i ever did - doc said 6 months off - and i was back in the saddle 3 months after op as went so well. Never looked back i put up with the pain for so long, tried everything and went for the op in the end - i do have medical insurance with work so didnt take long to get it done, but nhs cant leave you in pain.
dont sell your horse - get someone else to ride or lunge if you are able. i paid an instructor to teach my friend on mine. you'll regret selling her.

As kezimac says go back make sure you have an mri. I would also adv very strongly that if you have been seen by orthopaedic specialists then request to be seen by a neurologist if there is any disc problem as they operate using micro tools and less invasive techniques. If you are in the SE I can recommend someone who has sorted out my husband and my friend when both were told "to get on with it".

In addition to the recommendations above I would recommend you try some Bowen treatments. A family member had some crushed vertabrae in his back a few years ago and was in considerable discomfort. The Bowen really helped.

Worth a go, it must be agony for you at the moment.

Please don't sell your horse just yet, she looks so special and it would be a shame to let her go and then regret it.

I too have suffered a lot with back pain and sciatica. I went to all sorts of people to help and I found that Bowen helped as mentioned above, and a good remedial sports massage that I have regularly. I also visit a chiro when I know that I have an unlevel pelvis as I can feel the difference. It is usually when I`ve fallen off my horse.

Please look into alternative therapies, they do work wonders.

I slipped my disc age 18, I am now nearing 29.
It did take months to settle down, I was laid up, on doctors advice, after 3 months I got acupuncture and osteopathy which helped immensely. The doctors and hospital were of no help, they did not want to give me physio as they did not want to be liable for causing more damage!

Anyway, regards your horse, it sounds like you love her very much, I did not sell my mare, my lovely family helped me out while i was laid up.
I would say try and get some help, share or similar perhaps.

How long have you had the slipped disc? They can take some time to settle down

I think you should sell her

to me .......

She is gorgeous!

In all seriousness, I dont think you should make any hasty decisions - you would only regret it! As suggested, cant you just get someone to ride or lunge her until your back is sorted? .... There are plenty of avenues you could try to get your back feeling better

No don't sell her as otherwise what will make you get up out of bed at all. I'd take the advice people have given you about treatments, one might not work but another might. I'd say you are really feeling down at the moment, pain does that to a person, try and find a rider or could your neice recommend someone local that can help you out for awhile. Please try and think positive, you will sort out your back and you will ride your mare.

I messed my back up some 10yrs ago, and with plenty of chiro & physio it came back to normality. I've had several set backs, and on a visit a few yrs ago when I told my chiro that we'd bought Dolly, she said, "Ahhhhh, she'll be too big for you to cope with. She's going to be too wide and it'll set your pelvis out of line and you'll end up with issues again." I totally ignored her and in the last 2 yrs, I broke her and ride her a few times a week at least.

Issue is, I think the chiro may be right. I can sit on my LW horse all day and be fine after. I do an hour on Dolly and my back is feeling it. I know it's the broadness of her back coupled with her size and strength and it's going to ruin my health.

Point is, perhaps you should sell or loan yours out (as it looks quite HW) and then get something more compact to potter about on.

I would also recommend Bowen Therapy, infact i have an appointment with mine tomorrow and i know she is going to tell me off as should have gone to see her months ago.

Don't give up. Your lovely Clyde girl. What about putting her in foal this year and give yourself time to heal. THe two of you can then start over when you are better and its far easier to find help to look after a horse than to commit to riding also. You seem to know her and trust her and clearly think a lot of her.

Do not let not being able to ride take away your pleasure in your horse nor feel guilty because you cannot bring your horse on just now. There is far more to horses than riding alone. She would be splendid in harness - another idea!!!! Then your back would not be a problem you could drive her. Good luck
