Really fed up with JRT owners and their dogs!

I'm just fed up with small dogs in general :mad: Poor Yellow Dog got chased again today by a terrier of some sort - he won't stand up for himself these days so he just runs to me. It's now happening every few days that we meet aggressive small dogs running free off the lead out of control - I thought it was just me but other people at the yard were complaining, one especially because she has JRTs and they're very well trained. I don't know if its because people think small dogs are easier to look after and do less training or if small dogs just attract rubbish owners - either way I'm just glad they're small enough to peel off my dog and toss back to the owners :rolleyes:
 
I am sure there are some well trained JRT and other small dogs but the majority I have come across have been very unruly and badly behaved. I wouldnt own a terrier of any sort but that is personal preference and each to their own. Ass a former postlady I was bitten more times by Jack Russels than any other breed of dog mostly because they were allowed to roam around freely and were rarely under control usually living in housing estates with tiny gardens.
My vet use to day he would rather deal with a hundred rottweilers and dobermans than one jack russel.
I do know some very cute and nice natured ones though and they seem to be getting less yappy and vicious
 
We seem to attract all the useless owners of fat untrained sodding labs. None existent recall but still allowed off the lead.
Thanks to these dimwitted owners we now have a beautifully trained working Mali who's nervous as hell of other dogs and who can blame him when he's been attacked by them!!
We now always walk with a stick and, after warning the owners that I'm prepared to use it, I've sent more than one fat lab running back to its owner with its tail between its legs.

I have JRT and Chihauhua and foxhound

The little 2 have recal and dont fight other dogs but will however give as good as they get if another starts

The fox hound is walked on a lunge line as when the nose goes down the ears go off = no recall until HE is READY :cool:
 
My westie was attacked by a gsd but I don't hate them, I have also owned a Jack.

My Scottie is worst she is a protector you see and won't let any dog near me and will have a right go at ithe idiot who let their dogs just wonder off the lead. Her recall is perfect.

Its the dog world you have to learn to live with it. We had a boxer cross come over a few weeks ago from the end of a massive field and that had to have a kicked up the ass to get it away as it started growling. I refuse to have to pay out for another vets bill after being attacked last time or worst my dog to be pts because some idiot can't be bothered to watch their dog, and the majority of these are large put of control bouncy things with no idea owners, just playing until they get a kick from me to f off out of our walking space and don't ruin our time walking, I carried a walking stick for a while after the attack as she was so scared.

I have four Jacks and love them to bits. On New Year's Day some non-doggy friends called round and were totally enthralled with the dogs, couldn't believed how sensible and calm they are. They have their moments like all dogs, they are fantastic guard dogs, purely in the sense that they bark their heads off, they love our postman, but that's possibly because he always has a biscuit or two in his jacket for them. They are totally loyal and hate to be out of sight on walks. Recall is so good they don't need leads, generally other dog owners have more trouble with their one dog than i have controlling four. Mine will come and sit with me until the recalcitrant dog is lured away by the owner. Training started early with all of them, I think this is the key whatever breed you have, they have never got away with misbehaving but are so tuned in to me that a glare suffices, they've never been hit as basically any dog just wants to please and we tapped in to that. We always had big dogs when I was young, I just got fed up of being upset as they don't seem to live as long as the little toughies. Ours range from 14 years old to 7 and the 14 year old is probably the liveliest of the lot. I love all dogs, a friend of mine has two rotties which also receive bad press but they are truly gorgeous, and again well trained.

only joking but I think a lot of people assume every dog automatically behaves like Pudsey and doesn't have any idea of the training needed to make it behave like that!
 
I have had 6 JRT's in all. They have never attacked another dog. Yes they may bark hello when they meet another but not always.
We walked our 3 on the beach on Monday, sign says all dogs to be kept on leads. Dog owners of all breeds cannot read & cannot control their dogs.
What really peeved me was owners taking no notice of their medium to large size dogs jumping up at my toddler sons & knocking them over plus all the bum sniffing of my dogs who were controllable at all times on their leads.

My jrt is the sweetest dog around who is now terrified of large dogs due to inconsiderate owners!!
I would NEVER allow my dogs to approach strange dogs without first checking with the owner, a rule which is ignored by 90% of owners of 'friendly' dogs. Well actually its rough and not appropriate to be 'playing' with my little one, making me look like the hysterical owner of a 'precious baby' but actually its the brutish large breeds who are out of control!

Agree with this. The generalisation of the breed really doesnt and shouldnt apply and only fuels the stereotypical over reactions that we see . My JRT is gentle, well trained and never gone for another dog. She has however been chased, bowled over, bitten and harrassed by a range of dogs including labs, GSD, dalmations and whippets. I dont blame the breed, I blame the owners.
 
Have to say most of the dogs that try and get at my dog (irish setter,friendliest dope of a breed ever as I'm sure everyone will agree) in what seems to be an aggressive manner are JRT's.

There are a few around where I live and without fail if we meet them when walking they make a right fuss even if on the other side of the road,some distance away etc.This is usually on lead,as when off lead my setter can shift far faster than them so get's out the way;)

I would be furious if my dog behaved like these dogs when on lead,up on their back legs,pulling like a train yapping and going frantic to get at my lad,who BTW completely ignores as knows the leave command (and quite frankly if I've managed to train a setter then owners of JRT's shouldn't have any problems!!).

I am sure the owners are at fault (many of the ones I have met seem to have very little influence over their dogs behaviour once they get going),but IME even well trained JRT's have that mindset of gob off first and think later!!

There are one or two other dogs we have problems with occasionally,but I know that every JRT we see we are going to have issues with,and every time we're out I'm proved right.

Of course I have the most annoying dog on the planet so I can't talk,but he has the opposite problem of being completely over friendly and daft as a brush:rolleyes:

Perhaps you got lucky and got the quiet model,i have never met a JRT yet that was not yappy and very vocal towards other dogs and when announcing people etc.

I don't think I'm being judgmental to think that to be fair,small terriers and indeed small dogs in general are quite known to be yappy are they not??

Genuine question BTW as it is a common opinion AFAIK,and even the JRT owners I meet say the same as they're rolling their eyes and apologising;)

Doesn't help with my lad as he's the most non vocal dog,rarely barks so it's all the more noticeable I guess when these small dogs are frantically barking and scrabbling to get at him lol

I've had jack Russell's all my life and currently have four, they have always been well socialised and never yappy, the older pair go on hacks with me and wander about the yard loose, they come to call and don't pick fights. The two pups will be the same.

Sadly I have had one JRT badly injured, was touch and go for days at the vets when he was attacked by a Greyhound that was off lead in my own garden and the so called trainer didn't even attempt to recall his dog off mine, in the end I had to separate them by beating the greyhound off with a yard brush only to have the guy that owned it yell at me for hitting his dog. He's lucky I didn't kill it. We took him to court over it for vet fees.

The other older one we had died as a result of his injuries after being attacked by a staffie when out for a walk. Poor sod was as gentle as a butterfly and just lay down while the staff literally ripped him apart. He didn't even try to fight back. I cried for weeks over it, the stuffy owner still hasn't been tracked down. :(

Dunno if I have a quiet model or have just stamped on him enough!;):D

Small dogs are generally yappier that big dogs, but I think that is often because they are allowed to be. The gobbest dogs I have ever met have all been Cockers TBH.

Does the stamping method work for other training,like recall and general dumbness,if so I will try it on dopey setter,nothing else has worked lol:D:p

I have to say all small dogs I know have been yappy and annoying,but i never even thought about it being a training issue,just assumed they liked the sound of their own voices and was a trait of theirs (like small person syndrome in people;)),perhaps it is the owners problem then,although would think they would make the effort so could have some peace and quiet;)

Always had mixed feelings about cockers.Cute as a button and an ideal size and type,but have met a few grumpy ones which has put me off them a bit.
Met some fab 'sprockers' though,and handsome too,still the cocker element puts me off if I'm honest.

TBH I think people with yappy dogs go deaf to the noise...........a bit like how parents with whinging kids seem unable hear the constant mummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm call!;)
 
I love small dogs as they have the best personalities, my Scottie doesn't yap she barks at strangers but that's it. There is a horrible retriever thing at the back of us and all it does is bark went its in the garden, why can't people send their dogs in when they start?
