Can anyone give me a recomendation for a really good Fly rug or sweet itch rug??
Horse doesnt have Sweet itch but i need really good fly protection which is why im thinking a Sweet itch rug would be better.

Ive bought a Weatherbeta fly rug with a belly but it's hopeless, ive never got on with Weatherbeta rugs so i dont now why i bought it.

Im looking at a Rambo Sweet itch hoody any good??

The best one to keep midges off is the Boett. I have tried pretty much all the others. if you have a horse that is really bothered by biting flies - as mine is. It is the best thing on the market. They do get a bit hot in it, but they don't get bitten

Just purchased a premier equine bug buster rug... haven't tried it out yet but looks like it will do the trick. Might turn him out in it next week and re-post. Does look very like the old amigo one and that was very good aswell... unfortunately it got eaten...

I'm looking after an elderly mare at the moment who has sweetitch and wears a Rambo Sweetitch hoody, it is fantastic! It never moves, covers really well and amazingly she never seems to get hot under it.

Last summer, I bought a Mark Todd one for Grace because I needed one that would fully cover the colic surgery scar, plus be good enough for her to wear 24/7 when the flies were bad (she comes up in huge huge lumpies).

I think the Mark Todd one is excellent quality, I am really impressed with it and would certainly buy another one. I also have a Weatherbeeta one for Han which is no where near the quality. The Mark Todd one has elastic at the head area so it truly does stay up on their neck whereas the Weatherbeeta one slips down and only does a reasonable job at keeping the flies off.

I've tried them all - liked the Mark Todd but found it came up a little small and rubbed the shoulders - maybe go one size up. Have had OK results with the Masta one, not liked the Shires, but do like the Bucas Buzz Off, though there is an obscure little elastic strap across the forehead to make the neck stay up, which doesn't work!
My favourite, and I've used it for two years now, is the Rambo Protector - the light brown one. Material feels rough and odd, but it sits lightly on the horse and never rubs. Also, the mane liner does a fantastic job of flattening and straightening the mane - worth it for that alone. Also you can buy a rain liner to attach to the inside.

Another alternative if you do want to spend that much, is go for the new Rambo flysheet (launched BETA last year) which is impregnated with permethrin fly repellent. Costs about £150 but the repellent lasts for 25 rug washes, which is YEARS of not having to buy repellent at a tenner a bottle!

Thanks Caismum, i would love the Rambo Flybuster with Permethrin. Do you know how much room there is in the neck??
I struggle with my Rambo Duo neck with this horse as he has a huge neck. Im worried about buying one & finding it's the same very tight fit on the neck. He's a 6"9 rug but 18hh.

Another Rambo Protector fan member! It's brilliant and above all, horse stays cool. So many of them are polyester and don't let any air through, wait until July and your horse will boil (if we have the good summer promised of course)

Hmmm, I think it's quite standard - my gekding has tons of room but has a twig neck! Given the cost, it might be an idea to call round some tackshops and see if you can see one in the flesh - and try and take a measurement of this massive neck along with you!

I have a rambo protector and would definately recommend them. I brought my horse a boett rug but it rubbed her but the rambo never has and she hasnt got hot it in either after 2 years of use.

Another vote for the Rambo Protector. Agree Weatherbeeta ones are rubbish but the Rambo one has been great, doesn't rub or slip and he seems really happy in it.
