The local vet was wrong, he does NOT have bone cancer!!! Specialist took one look at the x-rays this morning and said there was nothing in the x-ray to indicate tumours, it was normal bone what the other vet pointed out were anomalies consitent with where an arttery goes past. What he does have is an infected joint much further up. We're waiting for blood tests to determine the cause of the infection, but the vet is 80% sure it's bacterial so all he would need is strong antibiotics for 6 weeks and possibly to get the joint flushed and that's it. There is also a small chance that it could be arthritis, but frankly I'll take arthritis over bone cancer everyday of the week!

For what it's worth this is the second time a local vet has given our dog a death sentence but the specialist has completely reversed it (Betty's terminal and inoperable lung tumour turned out to be her enlarged heart!), so I would thoroughly recommend a second opinion!!

Really pleased to hear it's good news. One of mine had a cruciate lig op earlier in the year and arthritis is something I have to be aware of so started her on Mobile Bones supplement made by Pooch & Mutt (the Blue Chip people) which she gets once a day sprinkled on food and cod liver oil twice a day in feeds. Might not do the trick but so far is totally sound!

Bloody hell, i hope that is being fed back to the local vet? who is covering the cost of the specialist? Being unable to spot normal x-ray anomolies is really a bad sign.
Great news for you obviously though!

Fantastic news, if a little worrying that any trained vet can get it so wrong putting you through that heartache.

I think all the costs are all ours, which sucks, but to be honest I am so pleased Dizzy will be OK that I don't care that much. Previous (UK) vet had misdiagnosed Betty's enlarged heart (despite the huge clue of the massive heart murmur) as a lung tumour, insisted there was nothing that could be done and recommended PTS. We had to push very hard for a specialist opinion, only to turn up at AHT oncology to figure out there was no tumour there at all. Cue referral to cardiology, but 4.5 years later the dog is still perfectly fine.

This specialist practice also has a cardiology expert so we're straight there with the two Spitzes and will only keep the local vet for very routine stuff.

Pleased to say he made it up the stairs and onto the bed for the first time in 10 days!! (OH and I have been taking it in turns to sleep on the sofa downstairs with him but we can all get a good night's rest tonight!).

Excellent news. :) We had a couple of misdiagnoses from our last vets. One seriously wrong (diagnosed hip dysplasia when it was neurological problems ie wobblers) and one not so serious but still cost us a lot of money uneccesarily. We no longer use them. They just werent up to date really. Nice people but behind the times.

But pleased dizzy is not as bad as first thought.:)
