I am really sad to report despite everything, Delicia's treatment has failed. Shes lame and despite being sat on three times only has deteroirated a lot. She isnt herself but bless her, she's tried.

Today i hung up her bridle for the last time, her ridden career is over. I thought i might be lucky, i just might get her back. She started of well and looks the best she has ever. But she isnt right. I dismounted her for the last time today and broke down.

Shes had tildren, shockwave and steroids. Where can i really go from here? I would never put her through an op. Im gutted.

The vet is out on Monday to reasses....a decision is going to have to be made about her future. It will all be based on how Delicia is in herself. Could i manage her issues and happily retire her? Or will she always be in pain?

I cannot think straight, sorry. Im crying as i write this because i think i know what i have to do....i dont want to lose my best friend.

I need to have a very honest discusion with my vet. Delicia's future is all that matters. I wont bute her for the sake of me not losing her :(

I knew one day i would have to face this decision, but shes only 10 years old :(

Ayhh come on .... nothing has been cast in stone just yet. And this horrid weather is not good for those with aches and pains - turst me - cold or sunny - but not damp - damp does hurt the joints.

Worrying is not going to help her or you - so lets have a sob, pull our shoulders back and enjoy being with her until the vet comes out.

I cannot promise you everything will be fine, but I can promise you that she knows you care and she looks to you as a friend.

So have a hug and be strong for her, she only has you and she really needs you routing for her right now.

There is nothing wrong in buteing to keep a horse happy - i do object to buteing to extend their ridden life though.

Very sorry to hear this. Crimbo has it right tho.

Devastating blow all the same and you will be sad because even if you can keep her comfortable unridden it will be natural to grieve for her ridden career as she is clearly such a special horse. I'm really sorry and I hope there is something else the vet can suggest.

Would play havoc with her ulcers :(

Danilon is much kinder to the system though if she needed pain relief long term. It kept my Ginger happy for her last 3 years and she had had a bad dose of ulcers too - she had one long course of Gastroguard and she was a happy bunny for a good few years.

Good luck mate -

I really don't think SS needs this to turn into a debate about whether or not it is humane to keep D buted or not, neither does she need to justify her reasoning for or against!! So please can people not turn this thread into one of those!!!

OP I am really sorry for you and D, it must be so absolutely devastating. What a nightmare :(

Stay strong for her and what we will be will come to be. Feel free to PM if you just need someone to rant at.

Again I reiterate please can this not turn into a bolshy for or against buting thread as imo that is not what SS has posted for!!

The only person being bolshy is you !

We are offering support - I am advising of what I have experinaced with keeping a horse pain free that DID suffer with ulcers - I wish I had not bothered now

I am sorry for you, my unriddable companion is now 22.... Been on bute for years ( danilon) and he looks fab! Every year we have the same chat with the vets and every year she saids looking better than ever! Made the decision @14 for Mars to hang his bridle up but took me a while to part with his saddle

Very sorry to read this, and I have my fingers crossed that the vets will be able to give you some alternative better options to the one you mention.

Sorry to hear this,I have enjoyed reading your posts and riding progress.
Enjoy her for now, things sometimes work out, which ever way, for reasons we don't always realise at the time, but can look back knowing in a strange way,it was the right thing to happen,at that time.

I just need some answers, as straight forward as they come. :( As long as delicia is happy and not stressed, she will live out a happy retirement.

This ^^^^^^^.

I'm sorry to hear your news OP. Have you tried magnet therapy? I've had good results with the boots.

No i havent, but i am waiting to speak to vet on monday and will broach the subject. Thank you :)

Oh no! I'm so sorry. <<<hugs>>>

Thank you :(

Saw you facebook status about this.
I am very very sorry to hear this and i'm gitted for you :(

I prefer Danilon - will definetly look up its uses, but what i meant more was if shes going to be stable fine, but if she would still get worse, its still delaying then inevitible.

really sorry it's turned out like this.

Thank you

Its ok, sometimes its nice to read different opinions etc. I have no idea whats going to happen. I really dont. I cant contemplate making that decision until i have had a very frank and honest discussion with a vet. :(

I wish i could stop shaking :(

Not really no

I wasn't really aiming at you CW you have just taken it that way, I just have seen a pattern in poor SS threads where it goes on for 11 pages of people for want of a better phrase 'getting at her' while she prob didn't post in the first place to defend herself...

That is all, apologies if I came across wrongly! :)

So sorry OP, hope that the news isn't the worst case scenario.

Thank you :(

So sorry. If there any chance she can come right with a year off pottling in a field?

I hope so! I hope she will be fine to be field sound :) after all, she does live to eat ;)

Sorry to read this update R. Really hope vet gives some good news next week. Hugs to you and D.

Thanks hun, could do with some good news

Gives me hope :D it all depends what the vets say. Dee looks fab, shes looks fantastic....till she moves

Well yes I did - I have not been involved on any other SS thread - I was replying to the question the OP raised What Now? - and I gave my advice ref bute to keep happy but not to extend working life and that Danilon is kinder to a horse that has ulcers... the next post is yours - so yes you can see why I thought you were having a go at me...

Like I said apologies, it was a premonition!

The decision you make, whichever way you decide to go will be the right one. All of us here have our fingers, hooves, paws and claws crossed for monday. xx
