Both our puppies went for their jab yesterday and today the quieter one just wasn't right. Flopping all over the place, tucked up, diarrhoea. Took her to vets and she was shutting down. Talking bloods her blood sugar is only 1 and it should be 3/4. Tested for parvovirus but apparently she has plenty white blood cells, does this rule it out?

They think she had a infection before hand and the vaccine has tipped her over the edge. We have left her with the vets, she's been given glucose and a warm bed area and maybe a drip and see how she goes.

I'm so upset just don't know what to think or do with myself?!

Anyone know what it could be?

Fingers crossed for your pup, you must be so worried :( Certainly sounds like a vaccine reaction, what breed is she? It is much more common in some than others, we lost a Dobie at work last year in the same circumstances, very upsetting for all involved.

Just seen you have a chi.. this is one of the reasons most breeders keep them until after they are fully vaccinated I'm afraid :(

Our little jack russell puppy got hit pretty hard by both jabs but she managed to pull through, after the first one is was pretty touch a go so the vet gave her steroids before the second one which seemed to help a bit. Apparently it's the same dose wether it's a jack Russell or a Great Dane, which seems a bit ridiculous! Does anyone know if that's actually true?

Thinking of you and your puppy.

Contact your breeder asap, let them know what's happened and try and find out if there has been a problem with the bitch, any litter siblings or indeed any other dogs on the premises. If there has, try and get details/any info that may help your vet........ideally, get permission for your vet to contact theirs.

Fingers and paws crossed for you.

We did and she just got narky with us, saying we shouldn't have jabbed them there too small. She perked up and brought up a massive ring worm. Has drank glucose water and ate a little. Brought her home and she threw up twice two big portions of water so we have now taken her to out of hours vets. They have said its hypoglycaemia and chihuahuas are prone to it and she's dehydrated. We have had to leave her and she's being put on a drip. The vet said prognosis is not as good because of her age and size. So upset!

Well breeder has given us two different dates now she told us 26/01/14 and on the insurance that. Came through today says 15/01/14. She has hypoglycaemia, prognosis is not good because of her age and size. Just hope she pulls through. Poor poor girl!

Fingers crossed for her, she is in the right place. The breeder is behaving very badly imo trying to put the blame on you when it would seem she let the puppy go too young. :(

Went to see her today and she's improving. She was on drip in night only subcut. Unable to get drip in her anywhere else. She's drinking eating on her own and poo is forming. She's has panacur plus and on 7 day antibiotics. She's had all her fur shaved poor thing. She has to leave the vets referral practice tomorrow and go back to our vets. Just really worried now about given her her second vaccine when she almost died. Anyone know the timeframe?

TBH.....my view would be to forget the 2nd vac - get your pup back to good health and a good weight; get her bloods checked/titre tested to see what she has in her system and if necessary start her vacs again months on from now, but only as appropriate for her. I would also check with a REPUTABLE chi breeder to see if they have any other advice for you....sorry, but I have no knowledge of the breed per se. I would also be very attentive to the other pup checking for early signs of anything amiss.

Glad things appear to be going in the right direction though! :)

Yeah reading up on it now and it seems so common little dogs having adverse reactions. I cant believe they give them same dose to a 500gm chihuahua puppy as a great dane puppy.

The leading thread seems to be only vaccinate against what you need to and go for single shots rather that multiple shots to cover multiple diseases!

So scary they are both so little, I dont know what to think. Vets saying one thing and other people/breeders saying another.

All I know is our pup was in a really bad way and still isn't out of the woods!

Talk to Unab if she has Chis, plus any other reputable breeder.....with larger dogs weighing c35kgs I normally do the standard two pup vacs at c8 and 10 weeks, the one year booster and then titre test each year and do single vacs if appropriate. I know this is not what is probably recommended for the diddy guys, so please take advice from those that know. My decision on what to do with them would also be based on my local vet's knowledge of what nasties (parvo etc) are prevalent in my area. For example, with my guys as pups they are often on the ground before being fully vaccinated - in areas that my vet deems okay and with known dogs that are vacc'd.

I work on the basis of minimising risk.....both through exposure to nasties but also through limiting input of chemicals into young bodies. It's a delicate balance.

So how long had you had pup at home before it had its vaccine? Did it have any vomiting or diarrhoea? Of course if a pet is already ill then giving it a vaccine is not going to end well! I assume you had them at home to monitor for them 3-4 days before vaccinating?
Did you ask the breeder about worming protocol for mum and pups? If its throwing up roundworms i'm guessing it had a pot belly and the breeder hadn't bothered?
High white blood cell count would indicate infection/inflammation. Did they do a parvo SNAP test?
How much research did you do on the breeder? They sound terrible!

Well we have come to realise breeder was not as expected. She had loose stools when we got her which i guess we put down to new environment. Breeder said they had been wormed panacur plus.

Yes they did parvo test in house with stool and plenty of white blood cells present. We did take her to vets on monday as we just wasnt sure about her, shes very subdued and timid- in her pen and bed area where its enclosed shes happy and will play but take her elsewhere in house and she just shrinks and becomes so subdued, shes terrified, whereas our other one is happy as larry. Anyways on monday they did the normal puppy check and said she was fine and just its different personalities, so we had them booked in for friday at vets for vaccines!

We did want to do a full blood work up but they need to take 1ml blood and as shes so tiny and so ill atm its not a very good idea. I don't know if anything else could be underlying.

The OP says that the ill pup was the quieter of the two, which makes me think it wasn't 100% when it had the vacc. I agree the breeder sounds poor, I have always understood that chis and similar toy breeds stay with the breeder for vaccination to try and reduce the chance of hyperglycemia which can be caused by stress amongst other things.
I am glad she is holding her own, hope she continues to improve. I agree it would be sensible to talk to UnaB and your vet before making a decision about further vaccinations.

Just go report Xena is now home. She's more lively than she has ever been with us. She's on 2 antibiotics, sucralfate and one dose of panacur left to take tomorrow. She's been playful, had some food and a little bit of water. She's had wees and solid poo and is now resting. Will have to watch her closely but so far she's doing well.

Our other puppy has been feeling a bit low pass few days but she was vacs on Friday and wormed with milbemax (will do with panacur in future!!!) so she's not eating and drinking as much as she should. So again having to make sure she eats and drinks otherwise will be having some honey water syringes! Fingers crossed they will both get better and heavier etc as time goes on!

Glad pup is home.....bide your time until BOTH are 200%+ before worming/vacc'ing again. Talk to vet and experienced breeders as suggested before as to when time is right. And breathe............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Yeah they need worming again in 10 days as worms were found, but will be using Panacur as its a much softer wormer.

Taking her back to the vets on Saturday for check up and chat about things. Only thing is we have a 4 week window to do 2nd jabs or have to go through the whole process again.

Hopefully they will both be a bit stronger and heavier by then. It is a major worry though. Although I have to say shes been back one day and much more perky and puppy like than she ever was since we had her.

Photo's of her today!

I personally would defo wait until she has finished all the medication that she is currently on....antibiotics etc.... before considering worming or vacc'ing again. It could be worth waiting to give her body some breathing space after finishing this lot of drugs before adding anymore into her system. Talk to your vet.....discuss....and also just pick up the phone to some other Chi breeders. The GOOD ones won't mind you picking their brains.....they are normally happy to talk dog until the cows come home.....at least they are with all my HPR breeds! You don't need to slag off the breeder of your pups or name names....just say that you've got yourself in a bit of a pickle and are looking to do the best by your pups and would appreciate their considered input and expertise! Massage their egos.....most people respond to that! Look to the breeders club for lists of good breeders, or phone the secretary of said club for even more pertinent direction.

Good luck!

PS Love second photo and I don't DO small dogs!! :):D

Yes this is a good idea, I think all her antibiotics end in 7 days. The emergency vets said to re-worm in 10 days and they have been fantastic, specialist vets! Better than the vets we have used, not too impressed!!!

Hopefully there will be enough breathing space between the meds, but shes doing very well atm so hopefully onwards and upwards!
