What do you do with it? Just a musing...

I usually have tonnes of hair, very thick down to my waist, What do you do with it? I have tried buns etc, but they all end up so huge its ridiculous!

Is just scooping it up and stuffing it into one of these acceptable?

Id be wearing a hard hat, not a top hat.

Or go all out with something like this?

Both are likey to interfere with my hat :(

I usually just have a side plait but thats no use for competing.

So what do you do with your mane? :p

Put it into a long low plait. Roll the plait up to mimic a bun and then put the net on. You can even thread the bun as you would a horses mane or just use some bands to hold it, but if plaited, it will fit neatly into a net. :)

I did have very long thick hair down to my bum and I did it in a french plait for meets and shows as it really brought the length up, I stopped the plait at the nape of my neck, put a band in and then did a normal bun. It did make my hat a little bit tighter. I really like the first picture you posted, that looks so smart and pretty. I can't see the big deal with it, maybe a slightly smaller and more plain bow, afterall you get bows on the back of show hats anyway!

You could of course have some layers put into your hair so it cuts the bulk out but you retain the length.

Oh thats a good idea, so like a bun but with a plait first! Ill give it a try with a tight plait and see how neat i can get it thanks :)

I've had a french plait in before to get rid of some of the length, but like you said it really bulked up the hat and made it a bit tighter. I guess I could grin and bare it.... :p

I likes that first bow with net, but worried that id have this huge mound of hair underneath! But maybe if i plaited it and found a smaller bow it would work ok :)

The hair I pay a small mortgage for a quarter for its thickness, so I am not going to thin it out :p but thank you for your suggestions :) Maybe a mix of what you have both said will work, a tight pleat into that net with a smaller bow.

Thank you :)

I'm intrigued. Mortgage for hair? Knew extensions were dear, but..
Also, get a big strong hairnet, tie hair into low pony tail, then loop it into roll and then a low bun, contain in net, fitting just under hat.

Sorry I was just drawing a comparison that it costs me a lot! Equivalent to a small mortgage payment per quarter... thankfully not per month!

Ive tried the method you've detailed above, but it really does end up in a large ball of hair, rather than a neat loop or bun.

These large nets you speak of, are they these ones?

That certainly look like a way to keep it under control!
Looks like I may have to custom make one. Big net, small bow!

Thank you :)

For me its a combination of multiple hair bands! I tried plaiting it and rolling into a bun but didnt like how it looked and couldn't seem to stop the plaited hair at base of helmet from irritating me - my hunting helmet does sit very low though. I use a thin hairband for a very low pony tail followed by average hairband to hold a twisted up low bun, followed by a bun net, followed by a scrunchie. Then put hair net on and twist around bun once and put a plaiting band over the top of bun over hair net. This is the only method I can be sure it definitely won't budge! I do end up with a pretty large bun but the multiple bands do seem to squash it down and tbh theres a lot of hair there whatever I try and at least its comfortable :). If I dont do it properly my hair drops out and pulls the hair net with it and all comes out underneath :o. I can't see how those bow hairnets would stay in with thick heavy hair unless hair secured up anyway, wouldn't the weight (combined with movement when riding) pull them out?

Can I ask what hair extensions you use, as I've always wanted them but was told wearing a riding hat would destroy them and my hair they were attached to so it was no point having them done ! Thankyou :-)

I normally do a polo plait on my hair, like I did the polo ponies tails. I've learned to do a french plait on myself now though, so I think I will encorperate that to stop the flyaways!

My daughter has long and very thick hair, she ties it in bun at the nape of her neck, puts a hair net on the back part of her head around the bun then bands that around the bun too. Very tidy and always stays put. She has down to a fine art. In fact she always rides in a net.

That's exactly what I used to do :)

Oh this sounds like something I should practice! My current helmet sits quite low too, ill give it a shot thanks!

I get around 200 spanish cuticle hair in small 0.8gm bonds :) The Spanish hair is very silky and acts just like your own hair, you dont have to treat it any differently. Often I find my extensions are more healthier than my own hair!

They should never break your hair if done properly. I used to do them my self years ago and ruined my hair, then I went through several well recommend professionals until I found the one who does them just right. Ones previous I had would get dry and tuggy so fast, or id lose loads of bonds, where as now they are perfect :) So just be careful who you find to do them, even the most expensive set I had weren't as goo as the ones I get now, just a matter of finding someone good i guess!

As long as you get small bonds and them put in properly they wont budge under your hat, mines never have. Just be wary of things like indian hair, as it gets really dry really fast.

I think I am going to have to google a polo plait!

Ive done it this way a few times for showing, with a soft cap on, but just looks far too big. The last show I did I made a normal sized bun at the point of a low pony tail, the dropped all the hair down my back inside my shirt! So it look just like a nice bun... but the rest was kinda hidden :p I dont want to do that again!

I have very long thick naturally curly hair so if I put it in a bun it looks like I've got a second head!

I straighten it first to take some of the volume out and then plait some of it and roll into a bun then use the rest to wrap around it so it looks smooth and not plaited. Still pretty big but not laughable.

My hair is down past my waist & very thick, I can get it into a fist size bun still. I French plait from my ears down (no higher, reduces bulk under hat, but keeps it neat!), plait right to end. Fold, fold again, secure with band, put a 'normal' hairnet over everything, then get one of the clip on nets with a bow, clip it fairly low, scoop it under the folded plait, and then I have a thin band looped through the back of the net which I use to flick over the top of everything which holds the back of the net up so everything doesn't ping out o.o That's the only way I can get it all in on my own - otherwise I'd need help! No good trying to do it unplaited, it'd just end up everywhere xD

You know what my hair's like. When I was doing dressage shows, I'd do exactly what _GG_ says. Then the last year I was showing, I got lazy and decided I couldn't be arsed and would put a big black bow at the top of the plait and shove said plait down the back of my shirt.
