My boy suffers with this.
I start him on mud gard supplement around September and then keep his legs clipped all winter. They get covered in pig oil and sulphur, reapplied every couple of days. No washing at all! The oil means the mud doesn't stick so can be brushed off.
If he does get it then I wash with Nizoral shampoo from the chemist - then hibiscrub on cotton wool so you can get really close to the skin, pick off any scabs while the legs are wet as the scabs soften, don't forget to wash the hibiscrub off, and then vigorously towel dry - legs must be dry before lathering with sudocreme on the sore bits and oil on the non-sore bits. This may need repeating a couple of times until the skin is clear. Then I either carry on with the pig oil and sulphur or use an aluminium spray to form a barrier.
